any way to use a controller to dictate which track you are recording to so that

My goal is to record and monitor my guitar on multiple tracks (up to ten) with various settings on effects and amp modeling. I want to use a controller( foot controller like an HD500 or behringer fcb1010 or pads on my pcr500)to switch tracks so I can be recording and listening to myself play through say my podfarm vst with a lead tone on a track then after I hit a control I am switched to hearing my guitar going through another track with say amplitube and it's a rotary sound then if I want to hit another controller I can switch to a third track were a crunchy patch is set up or a 4th track and its set up with a clean tone or I may want to hit a controller and I get to hear my guitar and record it through two tracks simultaneously with a clean track on one and a separate dirty sound on the other or 3 tracks with pitch transposers so that I am doing a harmony thing. The idea is to create a way to play and switch the FX real time on the fly and set it up to were I have the guitar being recorded through various amp models and FX so that I can compose on the fly like I would if I was playing through a line 6 hd500 and changing patches while recording but using sonar to dictate which VST is live and being recorded on the fly. This is the way I prefer to work instead of playing and recording with one FX sound at a time. I like the way the sound change inspires me during my playing and thinking about it too much creates a situation were work flow slows and the creative process stagnates. It may not be possible but if some CAL programmer could do it this would greatly enhance the way us guitar players would be able to record and use sonar and I think this could make sonar a must have for every guitar player because they need to use forte or cantible to do this now. Keyboardists would like this feature as well but they can always use multiple keyboard controllers were as I want to do it from the same guitar. Exception is to maybe use my nylon from a genesis stand on a few tracks as well. Your thoughts on this matter are greatly appreciated.

Sorry I don't have the answer but..
You might want to break this into sentences and paragraphs?
    It's really hard to read.
Are you perhaps using Firefox? It doesn't format here.

Chrome works great for this forum. (I had FF for years)
You can run it just for this forum if you prefer. It transfers book marks fine.

FF 3.62 or even FF5 work on this forum.

Also, FWIW, do not install Flash 11.3, keep 11.2

major flash problems kept me from watching youtube on FF using IE for that now what is with FF these people screwed up Flash integration bigtime?

looking into auto record in the manual and groupings but I don't see how that would work.

need to be able to set 10 groupings of tracks to switch between when any of 10 foot pedals is activated. FOR EXAMPLE: Track 1 needs to be monitored and record when footswitch 1 is pressed but when this happens all other 10 groupings need to be silent and not recording.

These tracks need to be grouped so that when one group is selected all the others are muted and not recording. I want to be able to come back after the recording and listen to all these tracks on playback and then possibly add in another 10 tracks for use in creating a second guitar part. I want to record the automation as well so that I can automate these moves when playing live.

It could be done with a multi input interface. You would need to arm all 10 tracks for recording. The switching/routing would have to be done outside of X1 though.

If the pedals have an out for each than you would only have to use them as you do now. All tracks would be recorded but that wouldn't matter. Each track would record as you use a particular pedal.

that would be a lot more expensive to do what I want to do. I can open up multiple instances of pod farm or other amp modeling vst's and use it to create a separate patch for each track so I can have a variety of clean and dirty tones to switch between on the fly but to do this I need to hear what I am playing through and use a foot controller to switch between tracks so as to not have any lag from switching between patches. Having a separate multifx unit would also solve the problem but if I want to reamp a lot then be able to use the same tones live when I recreate the song live I would need to have this situation available in order to use my computer as a multifx unit to play live with the exact patches used on the song I'm recording. This means that to figure this out is very important to create a tool for recreating live the sounds being used in the studio. If I use podfarm amplitube revalver and guitar rig on various tracks to get a variety of tones then how else am I going to get those tones available to me for use live. The more variety I use the more this becomes necessary.

The only true way to "recreate the sound" in the studio is with the same gear and doing it the same way.

You are trying to do a live performance with FX in a way that is not supported.

Well its something they need to develop if it can't do this or maybe there is a way to do it with CAL. There is a huge demand for this type of thing and every guitar player would love this if sonar could do what I just described I gaurantee you if they knew they could do this with sonar that every guitarist would make it a point to own sonar.

Perhaps but what you are asking is not just a Sonar ability but a remote ability as well.

If you had a control surface like the Mackie Control  for example it could control which tracks are being used with a foot pedal but controlling the FX would present problems and I don't see how it could be done playing live.

If you had a friend to handle Sonar it could be done but doing it solo is going to be a little hard.

There are CSs that are not conventional and might help but its the FX that is the real problem. How to get the one you want when you want it?

I just don't see how it could be done under your requirements.

If it were a matter of changing presets that could possibly work but again that is not what you are asking for.

Most musicians would record dry and apply the FX as needed afterward. Or record using the real equipment. At the very least use a multi pedal with presets with a DI box.

I was talking with support today about some other issues and the following idea came up. If you can create custom key bindings and figure out how to use midi to change them that would work. I then searched the Internet and found a program called Bome's midi translator BMT. It can send a message to sonar that mimics the process I am trying to create. Bome's midi translator classic is free as well. http://www.bome.com/produ...lator/overview/classic I will be testing this with a controller. I already have a Roland pcr500 and I will of course need to go buy some midi cables to do this because I can't find mine anywhere so once that is accomplished (via internet/ mail order)and I hook that unit up and get it working I want to get the BMT to recognize the PCR500 and I will use its pads to send the midi to the translator program and program them to send a macro of keystrokes that will essentially turn on the monitoring for the requisite tracks and enable record while disabling the monitoring and record function on the other tracks in my track grouping. Anyone else out there have any experience with using Bome's midi translator?
