I'm still stumped!!

After using System Restore to an earlier date (due to the Zune software wiping out my USB ports), I'm still mouse-less as Vista won't recognize it. I also re-installed the drivers for my Wireless Intelli Mouse 2.0 (going by memory here), but to no avail.

(Of note: the earliest date I could manully use Restore still had Zune installed in it. So, I went into Control Panel and uninstalled it). I need to backup some files before I reformat (I was planning on doing this anyway), but I'm terrible with using keyboard commands and I've got stuck (navigation-wise) trying to use Roxio to burn a DVD......

What options do I have?  Please HELP!!!

Did you plug in the mouse when the computer was on? I have the best luck when installing USB devices that way.

If you started the computer with the mouse already plugged in, try unplugging the mouse with the computer on, and then plugging it back in. If that doesn't work, try booting the computer with the mouse unplugged and plugging it in after Windows is finished starting.

I imagine you've done this, Mesh, but I have to ask:  Check the battery in the mouse itself?  It's easy to assume that it's caused by software since you were debugging a software problem.  I've batteries fail in a similar situation--it's a conspiracy!  Anyway, it's easy to check and eliminate as a cause.

Thanks Chappel, I'll try those technique's tonight. (When I do plug my USB mouse into a specific port, it does show that something's plugged in, but doens't recognize it as the mouse).

Yeah Jan, I actually did that first as a lot of times I tend to over analyze things just to find out it was a "Duh" solution.

Did you go to Device Manager and see if the correct driver is installed?  There's usually a PITA debug routine that you can follow from there.  I'm not familiar with Vista, so I can't offer any more detail about DM or that debug routine.

I do have a PS/2 (wired) mouse connected and THAT also doesn't respond..........this Zune thing really did a number on my sys. There must be something else blocking the wired mouse no?

I might have the original CD.....will take a look tonight.

@Jonesy: Yes, I've used it in XP and got the same results. I'm thinking there's something else causing both wired and USB/wireless to malfunction.....

Mesh, sorry to hear of your problems there. I wish I had a solution for you...but the reason I'm posting, that Zune software is pretty powerful in a bad way. I use it to back up my cell phone and sync it to my pc. Last week...it totally wiped out my cell phone just by plugging it into my pc. It's never done that before. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even sport a command that says "wipe out cell and set back to default". The next thing you know, my pc was acting strangely, my usb ports were not recognized, my KVM switch was not working, my mouse was working at random and my whole pc was just sluggish and not behaving right. A reboot fixed my pc, but my cell was totally re-formatted. Thankfully I have everything backed up...but there's definitely something weird about that Zune stuff. I'm currently looking into other ways to back up my cell without it but for my particular cell phone, it looks as though nothing else is available. :( I hope you get everything straightened out.

    Thanks Danny.
Of all the products Microsoft endorses, I'd have to say this Zune is probably the worst if not THE worst! Then again, I'm a bit biased on my opinion as this the first time a software has actually sabotaged my system (and I do have a lot of 3rd party software + free ones).
I even went through a program called Fixit on the Microsoft site (linked from Zune) which didn't produce any results.

I just need to back up a few folders and I'm probably going to reformat the OS drive. I'm just having a tough time navigating with the keyboard only.....will keep at it.

just for a lark, can you go into BIOS and check the settings? maybe do a default? and then try safe mode?

Even though you uninstalled Zune from the control panel, Ill bet there are still registry keys lurking about SEE this : http://www.addictivetips....e-software-completely/

Thanks MM, I appreciate the tips/link. I didn't get a chance to do much last evening (just backed up some folders on a DVD), but (hopefully) tonight I'll be able to check the BIOS. I agree about the registry keys lurking....will def. check out the link.
