Why would X1 Prod crash when editing fx & synth layouts?
Hi All, When editing my synth or fx layouts, my X1 Producer frequently crashes - like about 30 percent of the time when starting to edit the layouts.Any ideas why this could happen? X1 is generally very stable for me, except for this one niggle. Thx for any advice.

What are your system specs? What interface are you using? What synths/effects are causing the crashes? Is this a new problem? Have you optimized your system? Have you installed anything new recently like drivers or other software? You'll get better answers with at least some of that info.

a GOLD member is asking me what I mean by "layouts"!? Dude... seriously. 1. Right-click in an audio track fx bin. 2. Scroll down to Audio FX. 3. Scroll to "Plug in LAYOUTS" 4. Select "Manage LAYOUTS". That is where you edit how audio FX show up in Sonar. And also vst instruments. Looks like you've never used this geature of Sonar, eh. When I open the last dialog above, Sonar often crashes on me. This has got absolutely nothing to do with loading a synth or an effect. My specs or interface are pretty much irrelevant here. Thanks anyway.

Beepster, this is not a problem vst issue. This only happens when I want to re-order the vst's in my system. X1 never crashes on me - only when I manage layouts. (Please see my reply to chuckebaby if you need to look up "layout".)

The reason I asked about your setup is because I had problems lightly messing with effects and synths and it turned out to be a hardware issue. Can't you just drag the individual effects to where you want them in the chain? If you don't want to provide the appropriate info here you're gonna have to get a hold of Cake support. Unless someone here has had the EXACT same problem it's doubtful anyone is going to be able to help without more info. Next time it crashes like that send in an error report as well. Might just be a bug that hasn't been uncovered because I don't think many people manage their effects the way you are.

Plazma, what version of X1 are you running? I remember getting problems with the plugin layouts under X1a, and I think, X1b

Plazma, Beepster and Charlie were only trying to help you. They didn't have to answer but they did. One thing though, layout has a meaning that was used in older versions of Sonar. Without expressly stating that you were referring to plugin layouts it is easy to be confused. I was. I associate plugin layouts with the plugin manager not with the FX bin. Though you are right in your usage it was still a little bit confusing. But whats more important are your system specs as Beepster asked to help figure out why you are having this problem. The more information the better. My first thought is you may have a memory problem. Accessing plugin layouts should not cause a crash. It could if you have bad memory though. I would look in the crash log on your computer to see what caused the crash. But I don't know what OS you are running because you didn't do as Beepster asked.

I don't get it... "It's not my system because my system never crashes on me... now help me figure out why it's crashing on me." Why aren't you willing to list your specs? This is very strange.

John, I hear what you're saying about the way my OP question was phrased. But I did say "fx and synth layouts". And "X1 Producer". My Sonar X1 Producer Expanded works flawlessly - except sometimes when I want to manage fx or instrument layouts. As soon as I open the layout manager, it often crashes. I can work in a project for 100 hours without a single crash - until I open the plugin manager. In any event, I am contacting the Bakers about this. Thanks.
