julibeeNo one spent any money on a "study". The article states that the government agency was responding to queries following a stupid tv show. It probably took all of 15 minutes to write the response on the blog. $10 in hourly wages to post the reply to a serious (but dumb) inquiry. There are some interesting and strange parts here ... if Homer called these Sirens, he did not make it clear what this was all about, but the story also goes on to say that this is a part of Jason's trip, in which case, this could be Medea's magic to make sure she can get the sultry results that she would have wanted, and eventually got ... for a time being, until Jason met Glauce! The story of men (or women) being Hypnotized is much easier to deal with -- since it is easy to do -- and most folks that are well versed in the arts of the "occult" are capable of doing equivalent things easily enough! I don't think they need to be "mermaids" ... any more than anything else ... but the idea was ... that they were better, more attractive, or possible more enchanting than the average woman in front of our eyes. I have ... LONG AGO ... discredited literature and accounts of these things, that have a tendency to suggest that there are "gods" and then there are people ... there is no such thing ... it's all about us, and that's that. We have created a monster entity that we can not define and then we worship it ... how idle and fake is that? ... Greek literature is the first serious attempt to separate "men/women" from the "gods" and the reason why it is liked, by churches and governments, is because it allows them to keep you subservient to their aims and wants ... One, has to connect the inner sights and reality to the outer world ... yes there is something else out there, but it is not an idea from our minds that is called "gods" or "ideas" ... and many people have written about these things for thousands of years ... but I do not like the concept of separating men/women from Gods ... we're all one, a part of the "gods" ... or as one man said ... "the father and I are one" ... but most religions do not wnat you to know or be that as it renders their use ... done and gone!
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Wow, so I'm a PhD(c) in an occult art? Well, that certainly sounds cooler than I used to think!

Wow, so I'm a PhD(c) in an occult art? Well, that certainly sounds cooler than I used to think! It's hard to explain to most folks that a lot of those things that you can read in mistycal literature ... is not mysticism at all ... it's just something that we are not capable of seeing with our current "glasses". The trick is, if you can do it with music, literature, poetry, art ... and then you have that one little 3rd dimention that no one will be able to put a finger on ... because it is not them, and they are not capable of "seeing thru" into someone else! But you are not gonna get anywhere when you have to get past middle class mysticism in Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Stephen King! These works are NOT about tuning you ... in fact, they could be said to deceive you and lead your mind elsewhere so you have even less of a point of reference. The even tougher part, is that there are many people out there that are "clever" enough and "studious" enough ... and they think that being cute and clever is creativity ... and yeah ... sometimes it is ... but after a while it is so repetitive it's not funny ... ohhh excuse me ... it's a different note on the chorus!

I'm not so sure in this case--do mythological beings have an age of consent? For all I know, they're 500 years old.

I have to say that it is shows like that that have stopped me from watching Discovery Channel (and many others like it). Pseudo-science that panders to the ignorant and misinformed and keeps them ignorant and misinformed. Of course, this comes in a world that still believes that the universe and everything in it was made in six days six thousand years ago, so I guess I should not expect too much.
A scientist knows more & more about less & less till he knows everything about nothing, while a philosopher knows less & less about more & more till he knows nothing about everything. Composers Forum
