Record audio from keyboard

Hi guys.

I'm really frustrated - I have just purchased the fantastic 'Yamaha MOX 6' and am enjoying getting to know it. Up until now, I have been using a MIDI controller, not a keyboard, but I want to record the ACTUAL SOUNDS of the keyboard into Sonar HS7.

I'm finding it really challenging to get my head round it. I'm over-whelmed by settings in Sonar and on the MOX6. I don't fully understand the routing involved or even which wires go where.
My brain hurts because of all the things I've read but failed to understand.

I know how to record in MIDI.

I don't know where to start when it comes to recording the Audio.

Any help from you knowledgeable people would be greatly appreciated.

Dave.

p.s - BEAGLE! You tried to explain this to me about 2 years ago but I still don't understand it lol. Wanna try again, now that I'm not a COMPLETE newbie?

...I have managed to get it working, but by connecting the L/Mono OUT from the keyboard into the Input of my Mic Amp which then goes into the soundcard. However there's only one Input on the Mic amp and two outputs on the keyboard.

I have a feeling this isn't the best way - do I need to buy a mixer?

Q1: Is it best to record keyboard in Stereo or Mono?
Q2: How do I stop MIDI Software synth tracks in a project from sounding when I am playing on an audio track? (obviously, without just muting them which wud be useless).

Any wisdom on this would be appreciated. I feel like I'm blundering around in the dark.

Edit: (I've tried the Input Echo button like normal but that doesn't work either.)

I'm pretty sure that the M-Audio AP 192 has more than 1 audio input. Is that the 'sound card' you're referring to?

Instruments like microphones, horns, basses, are ok to record in mono, but many synthesizers are really stereo instruments and should be recorded in stereo to get the full effect. That means it going to take 2 inputs on your soundcard and you'll need to run a cable from the L and R outputs on the keyboard to inputs 1 and 2 on your soundcard, for example (could be 3/4 or whatever).

Thanks for the help - I think my problem wasn't the wiring up process but a setting in Sonar. I think the MOX6 software, possibly Cubase, installed/changed to new drivers so suddenly I was running ASIO. I don't really understand it. But when it came to adding an audio track in Sonar, and wanting to select my the inputs/outputs for the track, I couldn't see my usual soundcard option (left/Right/Stereo etc), but only 'generic ASIO etc'.

Can u tell I don't really understand it??

Anyway - thanks for your help.

Wondered if anyone could answer my Question number 2 from my second post??
I record an audio track, then add a MIDI drum track.
Then I want to add a second Audio track but the MIDI track still 'sounds' everytime i push a key. Hitting the 'input echo' has no effect for some reason. Is there another way to overcome this other than freezing the track?

Have you tried changing the inputs of the MIDI tracks to 'None" while recording audio from the keyboard?

57Gregy - Thanks for that! You've resolved the problem.
Setting the inputs of the MIDI tracks to 'none' didn't work, however changing them to one of the others does the trick. Not really sure why, but it works.

    Thank you.
