Cranky upgrade to X1 from 6
I'm not happy so far. Nowhere was it written that I needed to go through the updates x1a, x1b, x1c --> x1d ... 2 days passed before I figured it out. I'm not an IT guy, but this is bad support. When I downloaded the software, I should expect the latest version, not to mention that even if I have to patch it, the latest patch would have ALL the patches in it. So I get into it ... the new inspector covers up half the stuff I need to get at as soon as I click on Clip or Track. I cannot see the stuff that Clip and Track have buried, either docked or not. It's killing me. I can't see any Fx I add ... Please, please point me at a link before I ask for my $$ back.

Hey Timbo, 1) Totally agree about the annoying install procedure. They should do it like Cubase- run the DVD installer to set up the program and then a SINGLE patch that includes ALL updates to that point can be run over the top. We can only wish.... As far as the new GUI goes.... yes, it is different to previous versions. Some guys seemingly can not get used to it. For a guy like me, who is reasonably proficient with keyboard hotkeys it is very good. I, B, D and shift D are some useful shortcuts you might want to try. One hand on the mouse, the other on the keyboard, X1 can be navigated efficiently. Good luck timboalogo.

You can skip the a and b patches... Patch c will bring any prior version up to date... patch d on the other hand... yeah, it should have been cumulative as well. Took me a few days to figure it out too... I was getting crashes that when I researched in forums would have responses like "this is fixed in c" "this only happened in X1a" etc...

I agree you should be able to download the latest and just install that but the order isn't quite as bad as your first post. The install order is X1---->X1c--->(Expanded if you have it)--->X1d patch. HTH

I've gone through the upgrade pain... but, to be honest, I found all the information I needed in the various readme and installation help files and my upgrade went very smooth. As for the GUI... that's just a learning process. Get into Screensets, and learn the various hotkeys to manipulate the different views. I'm finding it much better than Sonar 6, and I've gone from a two monitor setup to a single laptop screen, and I'm finding it a breeze. I go for typical setup of Inspector docked to the left, Browser to the right, Track View in between, and the Multidock below Track View. In Track View I collapse the Bus Pane. I dock the Console View in the Multidock. I then maximise Multidock by pressing shift + d. To then toggle between Multidock and Track View I just press d each time, and that's me sorted. If I feel that I need more space for Track View then I will collapse either Inspector (press i) or Browser (press b) or both. Same with Multidock, if I am in Console View, and I don't need Inspector, I collapse it. I will also put Piano Roll View, Step Sequencer, Event List etc. in the Multidock. Going back to 6, or any version of Sonar for that matter, would be a real backward step in my opinion. I suppose it is easier for me to say that because I don't use Sonar in a professional capacity, and I have the time to learn about the new GUI, plus all the other stuff, like ProChannel. Bottom line, for me, is to stick with it for a while and all will become clear :^)

Screensets especially. +1 timboalogo, The first thing to do is ignore that they both have the name Sonar.. Sonar X1 is completely different from a UI perspective, and best approach it like learning any other very complex DAW software... there is a learning curve, and plenty of tutorials to go through... Screensets are the bomb..eliminating much tedious window opening, moving, resizing and closing..

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm getting a little better at it thanks to you folks. But the inspector! the clip and track information get in the way of the fx and I can't see them. I'll use the console instead. I like synchtron's ideas and will follow through. Thanks again, all.

So just click the little left-pointing double arrow at the top of the inspector and hide it or undock it and move it to another display if you have more than one.

Clicking on the currently active tab hides it so you can access the FX bin etc. Need the clip inspector just open it again by clicking on the tab or using the shortcuts. Shift+I for clips tab SHift+Ctrl+I for track tab. I've also taken to using the inspector like a right click context menu on steroids. Float it where it's best for you then just press I when you need it, hide it again with the same key press.

Here is what I mean about the Inspector. The Clip and Track cover up items I want displayed and I can't resize the top part of the window to show EQ, for example.
