Please dont laugh at me...Im a newbie.
Hi all...I have a version of Sonar X1 Studio in my laptop...and I literally know NOTHING about how to use it. My goal is to record MIDI drums from my Yamaha DTX-550K kit. Friends send me mp3's to play to and I track digital drums to those tracks. I know I need to import the mp3, but know NOTHING about MIDI. I did buy a MIDI cable today-do I need anything else, and if not, how do I get started? Anyone that can take the time to answer me (in layman's terms) will be my hero. Thanks Glen

You'll need some sort of MIDI interface to plug into your laptop to start with. Then I'd suggest the MIDI tutorials in the help manual (Press F1) Finally this video will help understand routing.

Work your way through some of the tutorials that came with X1. They are extremely helpful and are quite simple if you follow them step by step. It will help you learn basic set up stuff. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Glen, welcome to the forum. I'm not the most conversant on MIDI here but it appears you have a couple choices. I believe the YAMAHA unit has an audio out in which case you can run that through your sound card into a Sonar audio track just as if you were recording audio. If you prefer to record MIDI then you will need to use that MIDI cable you purchased. Take the YAMAHA MIDI out to the MIDI in of your sound card. If your sound card doesn't have a MIDI in port you may need to get something that does. There are also MIDI to USB adapters if you have a spare USB port but I believe there is a performance hit. If you post your sound card specs people may be able to give more specific advice. Once you are connected your will need to go into Edit | Preferences and make sure your device is showing up and selected. Hope this helps. Regards,

Thanks-the guy at the music store told me that MIDI cables would be all I would need...from drum brain to USB in laptop. FML.

Wait... whut? If your drum brain has a USB connector you then hook that to the computer. If not then you need something else. But you really should describe a) your computer b) any other hardware you are trying to hook up to said computer. You'll get better answers that way. Cheers.

The Yamaha DTX-550K kit has 5 pin MIDI connector (not the same as a USB cable). According to the pic I saw on the Yamaha site. So, you need a MIDI cable and a MIDI interface that connects to the computer. Many MIDI interfaces today are USB cabapable (meaning the connection to the comouter) so you would connect the MIDI interface to the laptopn (via USB cable) and connect your Yamaha brain to the interface (via MIDI cable). Now, you should realize (if you do not already) that when you record this way, you are NOT recording the sounds in your Yamaha brain into SONAR but you are recording the timing, velocity and kit piece events into MIDI which can be used to drive any VSTi drum Module in SONAR. VSTi drum modules are a program you install like Toontrack's EZDrummer, Fxpansion's BFD etc. Now if you want the actual sounds of the Yamaha brain then you simply need to plug the audio outputs into the laptop's audio inputs. This opens a whole new can of worms. Is your laptop sound card capable of recording with low latency (the time between the hit of kit piece and the time you hear it in your speakers/headphones). And do you want multiple outs from the Yamaha brain to record to multiple tracks (i.e. 1 for the kick, 1 for the snare, a stereo track for toms, stereo track for OH's etc.). So much to consider. Maybe you can better describe what you want to do based on the outline I just gave you?

Make sure Input Echo is selected in the track (it looks similar to ")))" )

It could be a routing problem. I'll assume you have a bus called Master. There is a button at the top of the track list that has option like All, Custom, Mix, FX and I/O. If you select All you should see various controls for each track and/or bus (if you expand the tracks enough) that looks something like this in the Track View: Notice the "O OUT (UA-1" in my master Bus A? That is my "soundcard". I happen to use a Cakewalk UA-1G on my laptop. Notice the "O Master" in my Track 1? That says route the audio from track 1 to Master Bus (A). If you do not look something similar to this, then that may be why you do not hear audio. But it could be any number of other things too.

UltraNewbie, Do you hear the sound when you play back the audio you recorded? Do you hear the song you are playing to while you are recording your drum tracks?

You guys have been tremendously helpful, thank you! I now hear all the audio, drums included, but...there is a time-lag on the drums (ie; I hit them and hear it a second later). Sound card setting or problem, Im guessing?

Sound card setting or problem, Im guessing? That is what is called latency. If you are using an onboard sound card you may be in big trouble as onboard cards have terrible latency. In SOANR press the P key (preferences) and then select Driver settings. Here is an example of extremely HIGH (i.e. bad) latency settings. See if you can get your as low as possible using the slider bar, then press apply.

BTW, high latency is sometime beneficial in the mixing stage if you have: a) a lot of tracks (30 or more) and/or b) a lot of VST plugins. Generally you want to get as close to effective latency of 5-10ms while recording.

And 5-10ms is usually achieved with minimal plugs in. If you have a lot of plugs/VSTs you may have to freeze the tracks with the plugs/VSTs in order to drop the latency without getting pops and clicks.

Hi Glen, and welcome to the wonderful world of digital music production. You have chosen a great piece of software to help you on your quest, but by the sounds of it you are on quite a steep learning curve. But stick with it, and you'll find that things will get easier each time. Sonar is a massive tool, and you may find that you will only use a certain percentage of it to produce what you need. Learning by example, and working through the various offline and online resources will get you where you need to be, and, as you have found out already, if you get really stuck then you can call in here. I've been creating MIDI music for over twenty years, but I'm always learning new stuff, each and every day. And I still love it. I can't add anything more to what the has been said already, this is just me saying "hi."
