Whiskey & Cigarettes

Had a few emails asking what I've been up to lately, well not much, busy with other stuff. But this is a song I'm playing around with at the moment, it's a work in progress, it only has the 1st verse right now. When time permits I'll get around to finishing it. Comments welcome though. Enjoy life. Rosco. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11734111

So that's your first verse?  I can hardly wait for the second verse.  I say that because I'm a blues lover, and this could be a contender if you're not careful.  The performances are quite tasty and leave me wanting more.  The tone of your guitar is right on, as are the piano and organ tracks.  Your voice sits in the mix just right, at least on my monitors.  Yet, the overall impression I'm left with is that the whole thing is mastered so loudly that it sounds squashed to my ears.  Blues has a lot of dynamics, but I don't hear them in this version.  Everything is at the same volume, and I miss the breathing so common to the Blues.  That's the only thing I have to suggest, all else is right on.  I'm sure you're a long ways from home, so I will wait for the finished version.  All the best to you.

    All the best,
    Lynn

this is an awesome first pass.  totally reminds me of Freddy King, who is an idol to me as he pioneered the 'dirty' electric blues sound IMO.  i found it refreshing that your voice is not the traditional blues guttural but has more a unique timbre accentuated by how you're pushing the overdrive a bit on the mic.  very cool.  look forward to the final product. could also be an ode to Charles Bukowski ;p

Hi Lynn, glad you like. Your comments about dynamics are spot on. Although it's not mixed yet, that is an area I sometimes don't pay enough attention to, thanks for reminding me. I will definatly bare that in mind when it's done and ready to mix. Mr Virus, thanks for the comments on the vocals, although I must admit it luck more than design. Vocals are the bit I least like doing, usually take a lot of takes to get something useable. Rosco

At first I was gonna say the Vox were too hot. But as it went I began to like the vox treatment. Sounds just like you're in a small club.

very cool!  you got me with the drum licks at the beginning and it only got better from there!

I do think your guitar is way too hot (overcompressed) before the vocals come in.

    but otherwise, this is fantastic!
