Layer problems.
Do you get these layer problems? On a midi track, if you bounce some clips on any layer the resulting clip gets put on the first layer, instead of staying on that layer. On a midi track, drag select clips on the track below your layered track plus some clips on the layered track. If you then drag move the clips by clicking on the selected clips on the track below then the clips on the layered track jump to the first layer again, instead of staying on their layer. If you drag move the clips by clicking on the layered clips then they stay on the right layer. Just an observation, no biggie

Yeah, I find the layers way more quirky than they could be. The bouncing around thing really diminishes their usefulness. I'd also like to be able to split a layer into two, say at a given pitch, instead of having to copy and delete from each version. They also don't always behave as you'd expect when you're editing. When I'm reviewing several takes, I like to put the best one at the top, and then if I find another I like more, put it up there. But Sonar always seems to fight me when I try to move layers around. And If I drag more than one downwards, it adds more layers. Annoying time wasters and concentration busters.

Same problem here. Can't figure out why I can't copy clips between layers without it shifting everything along.

I was going to help then I saw your location, now I suspect you're an Ipswich fan.... <------------- Just a joke Open Preferences-->Customisation--->Editing and under the "What to do with existing material" change it from "Slide over to make room" to one of the others. You may need to click on the advance button in preferences to see those options though. HTH

Oh no! That can only mean you're a Norwich fan and we can't be friends after all! I'm kidding too of course! Thanks for the tip, sounds like it's going to sort out the problem. BTW I checked out your tutorials and they're very good in an "operating-on-a-much-higher-level-than-me" kind of way. I also checked out a couple of your songs - good stuff, there was a particularly hooky bassline I enjoyed. Keep up the good work! Cheers, SG

Layers do have some outstanding bugs that have been there for years - though it seems your issue was a setting. For one example, the vertical drag bug: select only some notes in a midi clip (not all of them) and try to drag the partial selection down to another layer - doesn't work. You have to drag sideways first outside the boundary of the first clip, then split clips, then down to the new layer. Cakewalk doesn't seem to have the ability or interest to fix it I guess, seeing as how 3 reports have fallen on deaf ears year on year. There are a couple other issues with layers also, but I have given up. Don't like pissing into the wind.

I don't think that's a bug, it's simply a lack of functionality.
