Clean Audio Tracks w/Multiple Sonar Versions Installed ?

Hi Guys,

It's been forever since I ran the audio track cleaning function and I can't recall what, if any, danger there may be and/or procedure should be followed if there are multiple versions of Sonar and Sonar Projects on a single DAW.

Asked another way, I want to be sure if invoke the track cleaning function in one version of Sonar that it doesn't wipe tracks being used by another version.
Thank you for any guidance...

It's also been ages since I used that tool, too, but my recollection is that it targets a specified folder or directory tree. As long as your audio files are co-located with their project file, there should be no problem with accidental cross-project deletions. You can run the tool without actually deleting any files, to get a list of which files would be flagged for deletion.

And at any rate, the tool doesn't actually delete files but rather moves them into the recycle bin, so if something goes awry you can always retrieve them if the project fails to load due to a missing file.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Good advice from Bitflipper.

Just make sure you don't empty your recycle bin before verifying all your projects open normally - and I mean ALL of them.

    Thanks Guys.

Hmm... IIRC, I have v1, v3 and v5 installed on this one machine I want to clean up, and unfortunately some of the projects among different versions share a common audio directory.  So this might get interesting....   The reality is, I won't be opening hundreds of projects to verify if a file was improperly deleted.  And by the time I eventually run across a project that had files improperly deleted, the Trash Bin would likely have already been erased for some reason or another.

Hmmm....   Guess I'll have to experiment and see what happens, then decide whether to commit to the results of operation or not.

Can ANYTHING ever be easy??    lol

Needless to say you can lower your risk by having backups.

My thoughts (right or wrong) are that the tool checks all the files of the Cakewalk file types and then references the audio files that those files reference. So, my thought was this is completely safe for you (please ensure you have backups though) because as long as that specific audio data is referenced by some file somewhere, it won't be called for removal. I don't think the script is all that complicated it sees if a file has been removed from a project and then tried to remove that data. I think it's the same as opening every file, inspecting what data it calls on, and then makes a list of what is used and what audio data piece is referenced by absolutely NO projects at all. Like I said, that's how I always assumed it worked. But I can be wrong too. Would be nice to hear Cake's real theory on how it works though. My point is I would not be scared to try that.

As I understand it, the "Clean" process searches all drives to find whether any other projects elsewhere, as well as the current one, rely on any of the files in the current project's audio folder.  Searching anywhere other than the current folder seems like a pointless exercise anyway if your audio is stored "per project".  It therefore should be irrelevant what version the other projects created in.  In fact any details about other projects outside of the current folder should not even be a consideration.  Or am I missing the point?

Bad news.   I've just tried running the Clean Audio tool and none of the deleted files are in the recycle bin.

The safest bet is do as said and BACKUP the whole Cakewalk folder before you do any deleting. Why delete anyways? Hard drives are endlessly large. If what your after is clean copy's of each song open each one and do a "save as" to a second drive or new place and make sure to tick the "save all audio with folder" option. Only the stuff needed to play that project in that version will be copied to the new location.
