Nice Mellow BBQ (updated July 17)

I was given a BT a while ago and put some leads to it. I hope you enjoy it and as always, any comments/critiques are appreciated.

Enjoy!

Updated July 17. I softened the leads up a bit and took out some 250hz.

Just as I was warming up to this, it was over.  Leave em wanting more.  The guitars are nicely recorded and fit the part like a glove.  The title threw me off, as this doesn't sound like BBQ music to me, but I guess that depends on what BBQ means to you.  I think of a big plate of hickory smoked ribs, but this sounds like potato salad to me ;)  If you're ever in Kansas City I'll show you BBQ.

    All the best,

I like it, but I would go for a "mellower" tone on the leads to match the title.

Thanks for listening and the nice comments. The "BBQ" is per a thread on another forum. It's called a BBQ where a backing track is posted and you put your take to it and everyone says, "ooo, ahh." Just something fun to do and see what everyone else comes up with against what you do.

I was thinking the same thing!
The playing and melody you chose are great. Just too harsh of a tone for this one IMO.

Thanks Scotty and James. I like the lead tone but maybe a low pass filter could tame them a bit. Thanks for listening!

The sync between the guitars is a bit off at times and sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. However, I like the melodies and harmony, if you get the guitars closer you would have a very nice song.

Quite pleasant agree the guitars are a little harsh.  Thanks for sharing.

OK, since everyone else said it, I guess I can hear the harshness. But it really doesn't ruin it for me. Nice tune and well played. I like it!

Beautiful song Robert and terrific performance.  I can also hear what some of the comments are referring to above.  Making them a little less harsh or aggressive sounding might improve the song but - like Janet said- I don't think they detract from the song as they are.

Thanks everyone! I'm not going to re-record anything for this but I did do some EQing to take some of the harshness out. There are these really high pitch artifacts that I could not do to much with. At the time, I was using a really thick pick and it was hard to avoid it when striking the strings. I stopped using it ages ago. I like the thicker picks but can't find one like the Dunlop 1.14 that comes in a 3.0. :-(

I agree that it could be a little more mellow sounding , but I still enjoyed the playing and wouldn't have minded at all if it was twice as long.

There is too much harmonic distortion in your effect.  Also too much reverb, I like reverb but a little usually sounds muc better than too much.

The licks are fine and there is nice melodic conversation going on but the guitar tone is just too thin and fuzzy.  I assume you are going DI and using either a multi effects unit or a VST patch?

    Hey Robert, nice mellow track.

It's a bit hard to comment because although the track has a nice melody, it doesn't really go anywhere.  I'd like a little more dynamics.

For me if you are goind to do guitar instumentals then you need to go down the Pink Floyd path.  Try Cluster One on The Division Bell.

I can hear you have an ear for melody and if you can just put that into a better context, you might be on to something.

The guitar tone is a little pierceing but thats easy fixed, just dip the guitar or the guitar buss in the mids.

    Peace Ben

Very good comments from everyone here. The guitar tone can be dropped to what ever everyone likes for a more mellow blending of the mix. The playing is very nicely done, but it sure does stick out on this piece and is a bit over bearing to the ear. Mellow is the key word here and in the backing tracks. It's your piece and so you get to do what is good for your ear. Have fun and enjoy, this is most important, especially for what you were doing. Peace be with you. Blessings, John

Hi Robert, I'm usually not a fan of harmonised guitar leads, but this is nice. Would love to hear some vibrato on the long notes.  I don't play with a pick much, but when I do I use a 3mm thick bone pick made by Dugain (http://dugainpicks.com/ ). Gives you lots of fundamental tone and not much noise.
