Only interested in LISTENING to my work, not editing...

Hi all, over 6 years ago I was in a Music Tech class in my high school, and I made some great sounding projects on Sonar Home Studio. I'm not exactly sure which edition, maybe Academic? Anyway I bought Sonar Home Studio Version 4 XL a short time after graduation to convert the files to MP3 or similar format, and I ended up needing to do something for the files to play but lost interest. So in short, can someone tell me what I need to do exactly to be able to: 1) HEAR my files (.cwp) - they are on a CD 2) Convert them to MP3 file or similar format. It'd be GREAT if I could put them on a CD or my iPod. Thanks so much!!

    Welcome to the forum.
You can either open SONAR and click File>Open>navigate to the .cwb file on your hard drive; or right-click the file name on the hard drive and select Open With>SONAR Home Studio.
A lot depends on what your current operating system is, too.
To convert to mp3, you'll need a converter. Some computers already have a converter included with Windows Media Player, but you'll probably have to download one from the internet.

Thanks for the reply. I just found an audio converter online, seems to work great although it doesn't directly support .cwp files. Do I need to install the Home Studio software to access the files further? I currently do not have any editions of it on my computer. (Might be a dumb question)

Actually I think this brings me to my question I had years ago when I tried this. I downloaded Sonar Home Studio Version 4 XL on my older computer, and for some reason I couldn't get the files to play. Something about MIDI inputs or something?? I see that it's easy to export the work files as any file you want, but I can't seem to get them to open in my Home studio version.

Yes, .cwb files can only be opened with a Cakewalk program.
What's your operating system? If Windows 7, you may not be able to get SHS 4 to work at all.

Yes Windows 7, regardless I lost the SHS4 install disk years ago. I'm downloading the Sonar X1 free trial right now, do you think this would suffice? Also the files are .cwP, not .cwB, does this make a difference?

The cwp files contain project information only.
They tell the program which audio files to use, and where to find them, but contain no audio data.
If you did not also save the associated audio files, I'm afraid you may have nothing to play back.
If your old computer is the same one you were using back then, the audio files may still exist on the hard drive.
At best, you are probably looking at a fair amount of work to get everything back.

Nope I used my school's computer when I made them. This was over 6 years ago. Any shot it could work if I open the .cwp files in a current version of Home Studio? Wouldn't it pull the information from it's audio database? (if there's such thing)

    That's the problem.
The cwp tells Home Studio to look for the audio files in a folder that was on the school computer.
This folder does not exist on your computer, so there is nothing for the program to pull the information from.
Did you export any of your projects as wav or MP3 files at the time?
If so, you could work with those.
Otherwise, I think you are basically sunk.

Nope, since it was a class, my teacher exported the files onto a disk for us. Figures I'd wait 6 years to try and recover them. Ah, oh well, thanks for your help everybody.

You haven't told us whether your projects included any recorded audio or whether it was just MIDI.  This makes a big difference to the nature of the problem.

Right. If they were .cwb files as I misread, those have all the project info in them plus the audio.
The .cwp files have no audio in them.
Kalle also has a point; if the projects are MIDI, you can open them and work with them, then convert the MIDI to audio for exporting to mp3.
Maybe contact the school? Perhaps they still have the computers.
