Using Hardware During the Mix

Can I use Hardware like TC Helicon VoiceWorks during the mix in Sonar X1 Producer.  I am going to record vocals at another location and then mix them on my computer.  The vocals will be raw track and I would like to add a harmonizer to them.

    Yes.

Your next question will be "how." Let me work on that, or hopefully someone else will pop along shortly.

Okay, this is something that I have not done yet myself, but I will be doing in the future as I have a reasonably high end effects unit that I want to use at some point.

So, are you recording the raw vocal usinx X1? It doesn't really matter, because I suppose, at the end of the day, you will end up with a track with the recorded vocals on.

I would then set the output of that track to one of the outputs of my audio interface (I use a QUAD-CAPTURE external audio interface), but you may have a sound card.

I would then connect that output of my  audio interface to the input of my hardware, and the output of the hardware to an input of my audio interface.

I would then create a new audio track and set the input of that to the input of my audio interface that the hardware device is connected to.

The next step would to be arm the new track for recording and check the levels by playing the original vocal track. Finally, I would set X1 to record, and the effected vocals would end up being recorded onto the new track, with the effects added.

I think there may be a bit more to it than that, but it should be enough to get you going in the right direction...

    cheers

I've looked at the specs for both the VoiceWorks and the US-1800, and I notice that they both have RCA S/PDIF inputs and outputs, so I would strongly recommend that you utilise these connections and therefore keep all the processing in the digital domain. If you have any problems with that, give me a shout and I will do my best to help.

You can use External Inserts to do and the routing that Andy laid out will work with it.

Ah... External Inserts... I've not explored that option before. I hit F1 and read the help file, so I just need to put that into practice now. Thanks for that John.

Of course you can! I use outboard all the time in the Studio. You can't get the same sound/color mixing ITB mix. Its called Hybrid mixing. You should check it out. I use different Outboard on the MASTER BUS and sometimes I sending specific "SOUNDS"/Tracks thru hardware compressor and then recorded back again into SONAR X1 to get the color I like. I use also Hardware effects and hardware synths aswell etc...

Thanks. I also have a VoiceWorks Plus that I like. The original question was if you can use it in the mix. I think the answer is no. You can use it, but you have to create an audio track first. I don't know of a way to use it at mix time as you would a plug-in.

Most definitely the best way is to have clean vocals in Sonar, then post process using voiceworks... and as discussed above this is quite straightforward to setup as an external send/return.
    1. connect via spdif
    2. select ext insert in the fx bin,
    3. setup send & return to spdif ch
    4. be sure to select "digital" as input in setup screen of voiceworks (about 20 menus down..lol)
