Changing voice in MIDI recording?
Hello! I am trying to record into SONAR X1 LE from a Yamaha DGX-640 el-piano. I am using different voices - or instruments - from my el-piano into Sonar. So let's just say I'm first recording a track with the piano. If I now switch over to for example strings, my piano track changes to strings, as well! How can I use several instruments/voices on different tracks, without making them change all together? Thanks for your answers!

Each instrument sound needs to have a MIDI-channel of it's own. How are you routing the signal? What are you recording into SONAR, MIDI or audio?
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Kalle Rantaaho Each instrument sound needs to have a MIDI-channel of it's own. How are you routing the signal? What are you recording into SONAR, MIDI or audio? I have connected the piano to my PC using an AB-USB-cable, because my piano doesn't really have MIDI In/Out. In SONAR I am recording it into MIDI tracks, although I'm not sure it's really MIDI as long as I'm using sounds from the piano. I've tried to record into the audio tracks, as well, but that didn't work. Thanks a lot for your help!

Basicly, if you want to record MIDI which is then played with your piano sounds, you need to record MIDI in SONAR, and route that MIDI back to your piano in order to trigger the pianos sounds, and then route that audio back to an audio track in SONAR. If there is only USB connection, I'm not sure how it works. How are you monitoring during recording? Through the pianos loudspeaker? When you play back the recorded material, where does the sound come from? If you unplug the piano, can you still listen to your recordings (which would mean you have recorded audio or using a soft synth)?

Yes, my sound appears in the pianos loudspeaker. If I want to use headphones, I have to connect them to the piano, not to the PC. And if I unplug my piano, I can't listen to the tracks. But they are still there, and I can listen to them again if I plug my piano back in.

OK. So the MIDI is recorded in SONAR correctly, and routed to the piano to trigger the sounds. The remaining task would be recording the audio from the piano. If you create an audio track, is there an input option listed for the piano? That's the only way the audio could be recorded. Otherwise you'll need to insert a soft synth and use its sounds. Although, you have not specifically mentioned that the piano does NOT have audio output, you've only said you use USB. If it has audio output, you connect that to your soundcard and select the input channel in question as the input of the audio track..

Well, actually, my piano have a kind of audio output. If I use a 3.5-mm to 3.5 mm cable and plug one of the ends into the headphone input on my piano, and the other in the microphone input in my PC, it will be possible to record audio tracks. The problem is - I can't really hear myself whilst playing. If I turn on live monitoring, I can, but it's very delayed - which is even worse. Unfortunately, there's no audio input option for the piano.

This would be a good time to start saving your money for an audio interface designed for recording. That way you can get near-zero latency (delay) while monitoring audio that you're recording. Welcome to the forum.
