Can I install 8.5.3 over X1 with no problems?
I recently reformatted my studio comp, and I only installed X1. I have some old projects from 8.5.3 that I went to work on and they're acting weird in X1. I thought about installing 8.5.3, but do I have to uninstall X1, install 8.5.3, then reinstall x1, or can I just install 8.5.3 over X1?Anyone done this?

I don't think I would try it. I'm not sure but I get the feeling that some of the 'Cakewalk' program files might get all confused which may or may not be ok. I'd stick on the safe side and say it's probably not a good idea. Interested to see if anyone has ever done this. Mike

I don't know if you can do a retrograde install in the same way the upgrade install works, but I have had both 8.5.3 AND X1 installed (and working) on the same computer before with no problems. They were treated pretty much as seperate entities. Of course, I had 8.5.3 loaded FIRST; that's why I will wait for brighter minds to weigh in on this.

Sure, you can install ANY versions of SONAR side-by-side without issues. The only unexpected side-effects would be among shared tools and plugins. But those aren't going to introduce incompatibilities, only benefits. It means your 8.5 install will utilize any updated DLLs that X1 installed (e.g. the Sonitus suite), and will be able to use X1's new Studio Instruments samples. Even if something wacky does occur, the worst-case scenario would be simply having to re-install X1.

Definitely NOT over it, but in addition to it should be ok. I had both, but removed 8.5.3 once I got used to X1. I believe in not looking back.

Assuming you follow sonars installer it would NEVER allow you to install over it. It has always created it's own folder along side other versions within the "cakewalk directory". One thing I'd suggest you may want to avoid is migrating settings from other (or previous) versions. Whilst this may be useful for sound card settings it can be a pita if you want to have separate project folders for different versions of sonar as I do. Although it does seem that I may be in a minority of 1. Steve

Make sure not to install any Cakewalk plugins as they are recompiled with each new version. You want to keep the latest ones that came with X1 rather than let the installer over write them with older ones from 8.5.

It is impossible to install any version over another. It will simply install next to it. You will then have both to choose from. In fact, if you run 64 bit Windows, you can have both 32 and 64 bit versions of both X1 and 8.5. That's 4 versions in all. You can have Sonar 1 through 8.5 and X1. That's 9.5 versions in all. You could even have one of every version of every Sonar ever made on one computer... as long as you have room for it. Steve
