out of memory errors, and some compatible hardware reviews

I was searching in the forum and can't seem to find much info on this strange "out of memory", then crashing error I keep getting. Anyone have any insight?

Here's the specs:
Dell Optiplex 990 Intel I7 (sonar barely shows any of the processors higher then 1/8th scale)
16gb ram (sonar shows about 1/4 max usage)
Intel 120gb SSD C drive (50gb free)
500gb D drive (250gb free)
Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit
Sonar 1X Producer Expanded with latest update
Mackie Blackjack with latest driver

It happens mostly when I move or edit audio files (no plugins, or all plugins frozen). And yes, my system has tons of memory free when this occurs. Possibly there is a memory leak somewhere that is eating up all my ram when I'm editing audio files. My songs are pretty complex and usually are about 10-20 tracks @ 16/44 and 8 minutes length with almost every track usually set to a groove loop to ease editing. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Now for my quick review on some hardware I'm pleased with: Mackie Blackjack. This device use to have some serious driver issues, but Mackie released a new driver about 3 weeks ago and it solved all the problems. I highly recommend this unit to anyone needing a cheap, but high quality audio device. Novation 49SL 2 - This thing works great with Sonar. Arturia Spark - The best drum machine I've ever used. Have a nice day! WTF is wrong with this forum software.

Why on earth are you running Windows 7 32-bit when you have 16GB of RAM? Don't you know 32-bit Windows can only address a little over 3GB or your RAM?

Are you using the Mackie with ASIO drivers?

    Welcome to the forum ...

I see that you said you have 16 gigs of ram on a 32 bit OS , Are you sure of your specs.. Caus that seems like a waste since 32 can only handle 4 gigs.. And 16 - 20 tracks isn't that complex . Anyhow with a track count like that 32 bit should be just fine.. I myself have had this problem before, Im thinking the groove clipping might be your culprit , try groove clipping then bounce em down..  That should help you out. Send in a report to cake with your file let them look at it .. Good luck!

Thanks, I think your hunch about the groove clips may be the cause.
I am positive about my computer's specs and I wanted to stay 32bit because I don't trust that all my vst's will be compatible under 64 yet. I've heard so many horror stories, and I don't want to have any instability.

for me, nothing stops my creative process more then when sonar starts crashing or I can't load a plugin.

as for running 16gb ram, I got the extra 8gb's free so why not, it will help whenever I do upgrade to 64.
I am running asio on the mackie btw and it's seriously great. why oh why must I write html to properly post on this forum and why do I keep getting server 500 errors?

So you should have installed Windows 7 64-bit and then installed both the 64 and 32 bit versions of Sonar. That would have covered that issue.

Wow, you guys are good. It was the groove clips. I bounced the tracks down and didn't have any problems with crashing or "out of memory". Thanks for the help!

There is your problem, you use Windows 7 x32bit and SONAR X32bit. You need to change to the SONAR x64bit version and the Windows 7 x64 right away. IF you use x32bit version you get this memory message after used up 3GB RAM and that goes in a hearblink!

No worries. Your concerns are not valid!
If we go back 5 years in time this might was true for some, but not today!
98% of all plugins are in X64bit already so there non real excuse not to update to x64 today.
Its just old myths going around from the small minority of people that doesn't update to x64bit yet. Some of them that keeps saying this is those that still use of PRO FOOLS that still in year 2012 only support XP32?  It seem now that AVID & Pro Tools are going to be dropped and are out of business, no wonder why!

With Windows 7 x64 your computer will just perform faster and better + all the old x32bit programs, even XP32bit programs will work better on Windows 7 x64 then ever before too. All old x32 plugins work with SONAR bitbridge or Jbridge so you can still use any x32bit plugins if you still have any in SONAR X64.

That is why DELL, HP and all other manufacturer only install default Windows 7 x64 or Windows 8 x64 on their computers
X64bit is the future and much better!

As Dave said you can have a dual boot x64 and 32.. I have this , but to be honest I haven't used 32 bit in ages..  Better off switching if you can, And Freddy is correct today there's no excuse not to go to 64 bit. Everything for me has run so much smoother since the switch. Freddys advocacy for 64 bit made me switch and I have been more than happy .
What I would do if you can is leave your 32 bit install alone, and either partition your HD and add a 64 bit install on there , or just add another SSD with a 64 bit OS. So you dont lose or have any compatibility issues, when you first jump in..  Glad to hear the groove clips were your culprit. Tip..What I do is groove clip then bounce it to clips and then arrange those bounced clips as I need .

I didn't say dual boot. I don't think dual boot is needed. If you have Windows 7 64-bit installed, then you can install both Sonar 32-bit and 64-bit. I don't recommend dual boot unless you like spending a lot of time installing software and updates. Bite the bullet and start over with Windows 7 64-bit so you can use all that memory. I'm fairly certain if you go dual boot, you'll quickly stop using the 32-bit partition so why waste the space and effort.
