Say hello to my little friend.

Maggie Riley - the reason I have been a little quiet on the forums the last few days .

She is a rescue from some rather serious abuse (including starvation). She is skeletal at the moment, but eating well and getting stronger by the day. She is the most incredible dog in man ways. Its hard to look at her and not feel deep compassion. She is so loving and gentle, so willing to please... I cannot imagine what kind of a person could do that too her.

This picture is odd in that she looks about 4 times smaller than she actually is. Once she regains some weight, she will be a mid-sized dog of about 35 to 40 pounds. Vet thinks she is about 3 years old.

She has a face that seems to betray a really nice nature, despite the journey she's had so far.

Having helped a friend rescue five pooches, I can say they can be very appreciative!  Good luck with yours.

This will make dog #8 for me, and all I can say is I have never seen a better behaved, more loving and affectionate, playful dog. She has me more than a little smitten.

    That is so cool Shad.

Over the years I have had a number of dogs from the pure bred ones with AKC papers to the pound pooches and mutts like yours.   They have each had their own unique personalities and each was a loving dog in their own way.

I have come to believe that mutts make the best companions.  I had a beautiful full blood Irish Setter.... what a magnificent creature he was. Got him as soon as he was old enough to leave the litter, and he lived with me for 16+ years before he passed peacefully in his sleep. As smart as he was, I could never fully trust him to not poop in the house.  Good for 6 months then.... plop.... He would never bark or scratch to let me know he needed to go out.  He'd just sneak off to another room for a minute. That was just how he was..... but other than that, smart dog, and loyal. If he decided there was something he wanted to do or not do....he was pretty determined to stay the course.

But I do have to say, the most trainable, loyal, eager to please dog I ever had (up to the one I have now) was a female Shepard mix I rescued from the pound. It was as if she could read my mind knowing what I wanted her to do or in some cases not do.

The one I have now, well, he is a mutt too..... not a rescue, but he is very loyal and relatively easy to teach. You may have seen him in some video that I posted some time back...with a garden hose.

Enjoy your new life companion Maggie. (That is my daughters name BTW) She looks like she will keep you good company.

Smartest dog I ever saw was my uncles mutt, Rebel. You could ask this dog to do things in plain English and he would do it. I am not expecting that from Maggie, but she is Turing out to be quite smart. Would this world not be a better place if we humans greeted each other with the same enthusiasm and joy that a dog greets us?

Yes it would...perhaps leave out the butt sniffing though...
