Mackie MCU: Record mute button

Is it possible to record a Mute button push on my Mackie MCU in SONAR X1 or is this a SONAR limitation.  It's possible in another DAW product and I want to check to see if I am failing to understand the procedure in X1.

My work around was to open an automated mute envelope and put it in via a mouse move.

I know it's possible for a DAW software program to pick up that button toggle.  I wonder what it is that prevents a software company from fully supporting a feature set of a midi controller?

I gather that it must be very time consuming work to build the DLLs to support each piece of hardware.  A nagging concern I have is when a software company gets tied into a proprietary piece of support hardware that the initiative to support competing hardware might diminish.  Avid/ M-Audio; Presonus/Studio One are two particular companies that have given me this feeling.  I am hoping that a Roland partnership won't influence Cakewalk to do business the same way.
