Refreshing Midi Devices
If I pull out a USB midi controller, and then re-connect it. Is there a to refresh Sonar to re-make a connection. There dvice still shows in 'Midi Devices' but Sonar doesn't respond, until I close and re-open Sonar. Reason for asking is I have 2 midi controllers that use USB and only one spare port, so there will be times I want to swap. I could get a USB extension to allow multiple devices off this port, but as these are both powered from the USB connector under the impression it's not a good idea to add multiple devices that draw poer from the same port. The other option is a more expencive powered extension, but that add costs and adds to my ever growing sea of cables

I believe 8.5.3 was the first version that had a "refresh" of the MIDI connections. that's what you have listed in your sig, so I think it's supposed to work. however, I never did get that to work correctly until X1. so if it's not working for you, I think you'll have to close sonar and restart in order to change controllers on that USB port. so the powered hub might be the best way to go, that or upgrade to X1. however X1 is a very different beast from 8.5 and you might or might not like it.

Yeah I guess if I'm paying out for something, the upgrade might be a better choice. Can you point me in the direction of where I'd refresh midi in 8.53, it's not in Midi Devices. Just switching between the Trigger finger and Evolution keyboard, as my midi sax in none usb, so goes into the Roland Quad (which also has no seperate power sources, runs from USB only).

it was supposed to be "automatic" - and that's the way it is in X1. there's no "refresh button" that I'm aware of. when I turn a MIDI device on or off in X1, it pops up a window asking if I want to allow it to be included (for turning on the device) or allow it to be removed from the selections of MIDI devices (for turning off) and I can either say OK or CANCEL. CANCEL leaves it in the same state it was before and you have to change states 2 more times to get it back if you change your mind.

Ahhm ok, it doesn't really seem aware I've yanked the USB cable out and still shows the device under midi. SO when it goes back in, it's still thinking it's there, just not communicating. Thinking further, I have a Scroll ball mouse, Roland quad Capture and either Midi keyboard or Trigger finger in. If I get a (non powred) USB splitter and shared the trigger finger with the mouse input, then all 3 power sucking devices have a a sepearate input one sharing with the mouse (whcih draws an insignificant amount of power. Could be a way to go. My old flatmate had a couple of USB connectors fail on his mac, he thinks because he had sereval devices on the same port that sucked power, and burnt them out

yes, that's the way it worked, tho. it was SUPPOSED to be able to tell when you disconnected or reconnected a MIDI port in 8.5, but I never saw that function work correctly in 8.5. it wasn't until X1 that it worked correctly. in 8.5 and below if you disconnect a MIDI port it didn't realize it and if you reconnected it then it didn't work. at least that's what happened on MY system. but on X1, it tells you it has detected that you disconnected it and gives you the option of allowing that connection to be removed from X1's options or not. and when you reconnect it, it detects it. but in 8.5 and below it never worked right for me - it works EXACTLY as you're describing it is doing for you.
