Latin Pop - Rock and a Hard Place (Prod. Markno999)
This is another track I need feedback on and is why I am posting along with my other tune "The Fall". I recorded a version of this back before christmas on the forums and the general consensus on the song was that (a) it was a good tune with potential but (b) needed tightening and more of a latin feel. On that particular forum thread, I half jokingly asked if Mark wanted to help recreate the music bed and he more or less instantly jumped on board, we had worked previously on the ELO cover - "livin thing" which turned out really well. Anyway, we eventually managed to string all the pieces together to finish it off. Take a listen and comment. Rock and a Hard Place Cian

Ole! I love the arrangement of the trumpets in this and your lead vocal. This is the kind of music I'd like to hear more of. It has a good dance beat, and I can still hear the melody in my head minutes after it's over. That's staying power. Well done, Cian.

Lynn, thanks for your another comment. Both mark & I both came up with the horns, we glad you liked them cos they took about 5 revisions before we found common ground. I like this myself and have been trying to gear song towards a good beat and groove, its a decent start. Scoot, that was harder than you think at the time!

Hey Cian, I am a little lost with this track. The mix is nice, but the latin feel is a little distracting. I like the melody but because of the type of voice thats featured I would find it to be a better song if you kept it as a straight forward pop song. Even if you backed the latin feel off a little. It just feels a little busy and out of place. But thats just my opinion. Peace Ben

Well, I do feel the latin and the pop and it is all nicely arranged and well sung. Very dancable for sure and a nice production. I really can't comment anymore other than nicely done. I'm not personally into any latin music myself, but think this would fit right into what you were after. I did enjoy the song and you choice of instrumentation all fit together well. Nice work. Peace be with you. Blessings, John

The Band19, ditto to that. not only good at what you mentioned, but a perfectionist and the patience of a saint. Ben, My previous version had a less latin, but a general consensus was to make it one or the other. It may be busy, but I do think the latin style fits it and I do prefer it that way. No probs dude, thanks for swingin by. John, Thanks for comment and superglad you got a kick out of it. Lot of work went into it and am enjoy listening to it myself. Cian

Very inviting intro, for the latin story that follows. Listening on Adams (without ARC). I did something Latin, a Salsa-mix with Julianna (Julibee) entitled Arriba ( http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=9737833) ... which has 'kept its own' for about a year. Rock and a Hard Place: Things are catchy and fun throughout ... but there seems to be no vital lyrical hook-title to haunt me. That said, the song as a whole, the parts, the melody, beatz, and vocals are utmost magical and fun. ... so I think I love this more than anything of yours to date!

Only listened to it once (so far) but i like it, a real toe tapper. I like the horns, but after the first time they come in, to great effect, i would have duct them out for some sections to give the arrangement more dynamics and interest. Also i would add more percussion; shakers, cabasa etc to add to the latin feel. We did this on our track 'It must be nice' Nice job though, I like it

I would change the lyrics to make the culprit in the relationship a bit of mystery (cuz in reality both sides are always to blame): Sitting here, small cafe Pondering, Sipping on my mocha, Thinking about, what she said, Lied so many times it almost broke her. Ain't got no more excuses, Aint got no where to hide, Aint got a chance, we're hanging out to dry, we tried to dodge this bullet, Must have been walking blind, everyone told us we were fine. But now we're caught between a rock and a hard place, Got no where to go from here, She said its me or ya taking the highway, Will be a distant memory.

Philip, thanks for dropping by and for sure enjoyed your contemporary sounding ariba, ariba! I thought the opening line of my chorus was enough to hook, but obviously not as infections as some of my other stuff. I need to start writing more toe tappers, delighted you njoyed it. stuart, glad you dug the horns and that your feet were tapping. The horn ducking may be a good idea in fact although I would say as it is, the track is busy and adding more percussion may just make it too distracting. Jim, Thanks for chirping in with that. although incorrect! the women is always to blame, rule no.1! on a serious note, both the "we" and "I" work here, and choosing we would certainly make it more mysterious and I may just do that if this track gathers some traction as either a live set or if someone label want to rerecord it! Cheers Cian

I like the song. Maybe it's just me but the vox sound a bit hot. And there seems to be some crackling sound going on that is VERY distracting.

I like this a bunch, but then I would because I like a Latin feel in any genre. Good lyrics and performance. Love the horn work, what are you using there. This is a one of my favorites of yours. Good tune. Daryl

Thanks lads, bapu, glad you liked it. I know the vocal was recorded relatively hot if thats what you hearing (bad habit Ive got into). Don't hear the crackling sound you speak of however. Daryl, judging by your latest carribean post, I thought you might get a kick out of this style, a little more adventurous than my usual stuff. Horns took a good deal of effort and revision, maybe Mark will chime in here but as far as I'm aware he was using NI Kontakt. *If you have a sec please give me some feedback and vote; VOTE Cian

The horns are Kontakt 5. Three separate MIDI parts using a NI Trumpet sound. I usually always treat all the horn parts as single line instruments rather than stacking parts, using multiple notes on a single MIDI channel and sending them through the same patch. I think you get a more realistic sound that way. The three parts are running through a bit of Vahalla Reverb. Glad you liked them.
