Bouncing questions
2 bouncing questions: (1) When I freeze a multi-track synth output (eg drums), then bounce to clips, if I remove the synth my bounced tracks disappear. I thought was creating an audio file to replace the MIDI & synth, but is that not the case? (2) When I bounce to clips in a multi-layered track, certain automated functions will disappear, like clip gain/pan, track gain. Are these parameters being incorporated into the processing of the resultant bounced clips, or are they just lost as part of the bouncing process? Thanks!

Hi ! If that can help, instead of freezing your tracks, you may want to simply BOUNCE them to track, in the BOUNCE TO TRACK menu, you can bounce selection of tracks, busses, outs and such, then you get regular audio tracks, you can simply deactivate your synths in the browser afterwards, (and reactivate them whenever needed) Hope that helps ! Cheers ! V

I, from time to time, just copy a frozen synths audio track (or tracks) to other tracks, by holding down CONTOL while moving the clips to a blank area of Track View. This then allows me to either a) unfreeze the synth and mute it for later use, or b) delete the synth altogether. It depends on what I am using the audio clips for. I'm not sure about the second question.

(1) When I freeze a multi-track synth output (eg drums), then bounce to clips, if I remove the synth my bounced tracks disappear. I thought was creating an audio file to replace the MIDI & synth, but is that not the case? Well, there's really no need to go through so many hoops to get where you want. If you just freeze the synth (so there's only audio in the associated audio track(s)), there's absolutely no need to bounce to clip afterwards. Deleting the synth after freezing should NOT delete the audio clips.

That's what I thought, but it did. Is there some setting I have incorrect that would cause this?

There should be a a box that comes up when deleting the synth that says something like "delete associated track". Uncheck that box. There really is no need to delete the synth after freezing. As soon as you freeze the track that synth is no longer active and is not using any significant resources other than a marker and storage of the settings you had used, but it is no longer loading any of the samples etc so is not taxing your cpu or memory resources.

After I freeze, I drag the audio to a blank audio track. I always have a copy of the project with the sources, and a copy with just the audio.

I must have had the "delete associated track" checked -- tracks stayed this time. Question -- once I've frozen the synth, bounced to clip (which I realize now is not needed) -- I can unload the synth without a problem. But if I "unfreeze" the track the audio clip then disappears. Just trying to understand how it's working -- seems to me I now have an audio clip and there is nothing to be frozen from a synth output. Why is the "freeze" button still lit up, and why does the clip disappear when I turn off the freeze button?

I think it matters whether or not you are using a simple instrument track or separate audio and MIDI. I just now froze Session Drummer which was output to six different audio tracks. I deleted the synth and the MIDI tracks. Audio tracks are still there. OF COURSE, I made a copy of the project before I deleted these tracks! I did this to have a streamlined project to mix with no extraneous tracks, clutter, or CPU load. Deleting all the uneceesary stuff—AFTER MAKING A COPY—makes it load and save faster, too.

When you unfreeze the audio is deleted and the synth re-instated to it's pre-frozen state. If you want the audio to remain you need to select quick unfreeze but it will be muted (the audio clip not the synth) Any changes made to the synth won't be reflected if you reselect quick freeze though. You'll need to refreeze it again if you want that. A freeze is really just a bounce that is relatively quick to reverse(unfreeze) at any stage. A quick unfreeze is instant, as is a quick freeze. Note that the track will have to be frozen and quick unfrozen before quick freeze is available as a choice. It's as the name suggests very quick but the trade off is any changes made are lost.

Just seen your second question. Any clip automation on the selected clip(s) will be bounced but not track automation

When you bounce a track, all the envelopes and FX in that track will be incorporated into the bounced result. This is similar to processing audio. The FX are applied and then removed form the FX bin since they have been processed into the track. So if you had echo in the FX bin and reverb, the new bounced track will still sound like the original but the FX have been applied to the track audio and are no longer present in the FX bin. The biggest problem with this is you can not back up and remove the FX from the track. I do think you can choose however, what FX if an get processed into the bounce. So it is possible to bounce raw waves. I have bounced tracks with audio and envelopes and yes, the resultant audio levels are now incorporated into the mix and the envelopes are gone. Where I had the envelope pull the faders down, the track shows a flat line for audio.

As guitarhacker has pointed out it is possible to select whether FX are bounced or not when bouncing a track. That is one of the less obvious differences between clip bouncing and track bouncing - you get a dialogue popup when bouncing to tracks allowing you to choose options. When bouncing to clip you don't.
