Sound Treatment Idea...

I have twelve 2'x2'x'2 Auralex panels and was thinking of how to treat my studio room (rectangular 10' x 12' or so with a sloping 8' to 12' ceiling) non-destructively. So I found adhesive foam-board at Hobby Lobby (maybe put some glue in addition??). I figure T-pins to affix them. The only downside is the back, which I can put thicker felt on the back to solve... I would think. Also, I can cut the foam-board to make different size panels AND I could hand some by string if I were so inclined. THOUGHTS? QUESTIONS? COMMENTS?

I hung a whole bunch of 2'x2'x1" a few months ago with just T-pins and they're already sagging in places so....bump

Hence the self-adhesive foam-boards. They won't sag as there is even adhesive (in theory). Like I mentioned, I may glue it strategically as well for reinforcement.

Btw, did it improve your room as you'd hoped it would?

Yessir it helped a lot, especially the bass traps...so do you get these foam boards at like a Hobby Lobby?

Yes :)  And I got  a 20" x 30" piece  for $3.50. I plan on leaving the bottom 4" with no reinforcement (because I only have 20"), But 4 T-pins at the top and @ 20" should be plenty to secure it.

Oh sorry, I missed that somehow...yeah I was thinking plywood but this makes much more sense.
Are you planning on doing anything around the edges or are you just going to let the foam show?

just hang them from the ceiling all over the room at different heights and angles.  It'll be just like wind chimes, only different....

The foam-board will go to about 1/4" from the end of the Auralex panel the way I see it.

It seems like the white would show even 1/2" in but please let us know.
    Thanks,

Consider putting spacers between the foam and the wall, or attaching the foam squares to a wood frame and hanging them with picture-hanging wire. Adding an air gap will lower the effective frequency range, which is severely limited with 1"-thick absorbers.

As for where to put them, they're going to be most effective at the closest reflection points to the right and left of the mix position, and on the ceiling above it. The standard method is to have someone hold a mirror up to the wall while you sit in the mix chair. When you can see your speakers in the mirror, that's where the absorbers should be centered.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I could put foam wedges on the corners and still T-Pin (the foam-board is just rigid backing to the Auralex to keep the shape) with longer ones.

Not sure how I am doing the ceiling yet.
