Is there a way to turn on a MIDI controller DURING a project....

For example, if you have already opened a project with the MIDI controller turned off, but then you turn it on -- is there a way to get it to work without having to restart Sonar? This is really, really annoying.

Toshiba Ultrabook Laptop (Core i7)/ Sonar Platinum/ Windows 10 Home 64-bit
10 gigs ram/ solid state drive/ Roland Cubix 22 interface/ M-Audio 88-key Keystation MIDI Controller/ Samson Monitors/ Sibelius 7 Notation

yeah.... no... probably not. I think Sonar checks for devices upon start up and if it doesn't find one, it doesn't look any further. So a restart would be needed to find that interface..... I do recall seeing the "No midi devices found....continue without midi?" when I have forgotten to start the interface.....and the only solution is a restart of Sonar and let it look again.

Every now and then, during recording and or mixing....something goes wrong and my interface loses it's communications with the computer/Sonar. I get no audio but the meters are moving.....  I have to do a compete shutdown and reboot to re-establish communications.

    Fortunately, this is not common.

HOWEVER, here is my train of thought..... if something has happened in the comm path, I would rather take a few minutes to do a total restart (cold boot) of both the interface and the computer to ensure I have a 100% communicating and stable system before I attempt to record or work in that platform.

If you simply forgot to turn the interface on...turn it on first and then a simple restart of Sonar gets you there.

If you add a MIDI device with Sonar open you should get asked if you want to add it. Click on yes and it gets added although playback will stop.

That's how it works here anyway.

If you have a controller that is hooked up via USB directly than when you turn it on after loading X1, X1 may or may not ask you if you want to use it or not.

If on the other hand you have a MIDI port via USB and it is always on and you use MIDI cables to connect your controller to it and thus to X1, X1 will use it when ever you turn it on.

Its always a good idea to have all your gear on before you start X1 or any DAW for that matter.  One way is to have a master switch that you use to turn on all your gear first.

This is why I like to use a lot of legacy midi.

I have an 8 port usb hub that boots up with the computer then a lot of hardware synths etc.

A lot of them have USB but I use the legacy midi ports then I can turn on something if I need it and not have to have everything running all the time.

yes    +1 to the master switch.

My DAW is on an "always on" outlet, but the rest of the gear... interface, monitors, studio light, external drives, are all on a single switch.... As long as I get this switch on before or within a few seconds of the DAW, it sets up just fine and comm link is established.
