Noise while Echo is on - M-Audio ProjectMix I/O

Whenever I turn the Echo on so I can hear my instrument as I am playing the sound that comes out sounds crackly and choppy. Playback of any track sounds good, such as importing a wave file, however my recorded track contains the crackly sound.

If I setup my Windows to use the projectmix as a recording device and playback device, bypassing Sonar, the sound comes out perfectly clear.

I am running at 48000khz 24-Bit, have tried a different variety of these settings including the default 44.1 16-bit.

If I use ASIO drivers and adjust the sampling buffers I can clean it up a bit, however it is still bad. If I use any of the other options for drivers the sound is horrible.

I have other input devices which work well, but I cannot record with them and output through the projectmix, at least I cannot figure it out.

I am running on a Windows XP 64 system with the latest ASIO drivers, latest Intel Firewire drivers and latest updates from Microsoft. The system has no other software aside from some VST's and Sonar. This occurs with our without any VST's being assigned. I do not have the device setup to be used by Windows for sound output (except during my test).

I should also note that this occurs with all of the channels, regardless of of input (XLR or 1/4").

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

    Hi gunslinger,

What are your ASIO panel settings for the ProjectMix (marvelous piece of kit by the way). What you describe is usually attributed to your ASIO settings, and you are pushing your system beyond what it can cope with.
Have you downloaded and installed the latest ASIO driver from the M-Audio site?

Some of the other guys here may want to know more about your workstation specifications...

    cheers

What Firewire controller are you using?
Is it using a TI chipset?
The M-Audio units are finicky (don't work well with many Via and other "rogue" chipset Firewire controllers)
