How do I delete whole projects?
I tried using the Clean Audio Folder utility but it didn't find any files. I checked the manual , but didn't find anything. I would like to clear out some HD space.

Go to the location where you saved your project files and delete the file/folders you no longer need using your file explorer. Peace

if the project is really sucky, do as mentioned in post 2 by Jesse G. If it's just in the way, do a CUT> PASTE command to an external terabit drive and archive it there. That way, 5 years from now, when you want to have another look at an older project, it's still available to you. OR... burn it to a CD and store it off the computer. Delete is so final.

what i thought the clean audio folder did was delete songs from the quick open lists. you just basically delete them as you would any other file. that clean audio folders thing..wow.im not even sure the technical on that or why its still there. been there since pro audio 9.

If you manage your projects correctly with an individual folder for each song, then all the audio files will be within that folder in a sub folder marked audio. So easy to drag and drop the folder to the trash or a backup drive. If all your audio is stored in a global folder you will not have this option.

Scott suggested : Saving a project to a new location using per-project folders will make SONAR go through and save only the audio that's actually being used by the project, thus removing any unwanted audio files.
Saving the projects (with the copy files option checked) as opposed to just moving the folder is important.

Also, to save space when backing up projects, Save the projects as Bundles instead of projects. This will consolodate all the audio into one file like a zip. Much more efficient than just dragging the whole project to a folder on a backup drive, and if for some reason your project didn't always copy clips when you created it, it would definitely copy the clips when it's bundled. I use the per project folders, so deleting the project is just deleting the folder. Poof. Take heed of that advice, btw, of "you might want to look at this again in 5 years". I have some songs from 2000 that I have the renders, but lost the drive the original audio files were on. I weep at some of the work I did that I can't mix properly with the newer tech, so will have to recreate from scratch. I now backup my projects to an external drive, and cook each project bundle on to a cdr as well.

Thanks for the replies. I just wanted to delete the files I know I wasn't going to be using in the future. Then I read something about the Clean Audio Folder utility. It got confusing. Now I'll just delete in Explorer. I do heed the advice on not being too delete happy with some projects. I've done that before and regretted it. When it's gone, it's gone.

You can not delete projects with CAF-function, AFAIK. Clean Audio Folder function is there to help you to delete unnecessary audio files that are not used by any project. A project audio folder includes all the takes you have taken during the procedure of the project (unless you've hit delete immediately after the take?), so there may be several hundreds of them, but only, say 50 are used by the project, and looking at the file there's no way to know if it's being used or not. My guess is (never tried) that if you delete the project folder, then CAF can do the rest of the cleaning. But as mentioned above, if you use Per Project Audio folders, the all the audio is in one place and easy to delete. Bundles are not recommended as the only back up file format. They are OK used temporarily to move projects from one place to another. If a bundle gets corrupt (and they do that every now and thern) there's no way you can restore your project, from a cwp-file/Project audio-file you can always rescue the audio at least.

Living Room Rocker I just use the delete button. It gets rid of everything. The problem was: How to delete safely and what does CAF do. It's more than easy to accidentally delete something important, if you don't know what you do. And if you don't use per project audio, then CAF is the only way to delete audio. But I do doubt if anyone anymore is ignorant enough to not use Per Project Audio folders, the very beginners excluded.

I would caution use of bundles as I've had a few over the years that I couldn't open later. Saving as separate Project/Wave files (the normal way to do it) means I have a lot more flexibility to recover information, as I can run the file in Safe mode, open in an older version of Sonar, or just start from scratch by importing the waves into a new project (this last one being the reason why I always use Broadcast Waves with timestamps and always have the "Import Broadcast Waves at their timestamp" option turned on. Peace, Tunes

Bob The core of this thread is that your method does not always delete the audio of that project. The key question is: How/where have you stored the project audio. Project files are a few megas in size, whereas the project audio may be several gigas, and most of it may not even be used by the project.

As Kalle has said several times, if you're not using Per Project Audio files then you stand a very real chance of getting into a hopeless mess deleting projects, so, ARE YOU USING PER PROJECT AUDIO FILES????
