Max RAM determined by Hardware or Software?

I've got an Intel DP35DP with a Q9450 and 8Gb RAM which spec-wise is the maximum amount for this board and I'm running Win 7/64 Home.

Since I'm running 64bit, I know the software can handle more butis it still limited by the hardware?

Just trying to suck as much life as I can but think some of my larger libraries may breathe easier if I can upgrade RAM.  It would be nice if I didn't have to rebuild.

In this case you are limited by the motherboard hardware.  There is no way to increase the memory size on this board.  I have a PC with a DP35DP motherboard and a Q6600 that I just retired and am rebuilding for my daughter.

Thanks Jack - I knew you had this board and read your rebuild threads.  That is what I figured but was curious.
