Which Melodyne ?

Hi,
I hear you guys talking about Melodyne quite a bit, how good is it ? (compared to say, V-Vocal) And if I was going to buy it
(and I don't have a huge budget, up to say $300) there's a few different versions right ? which one to go for.

Thanks
John

    Here's their comparison chart:

I suggest you'd need at least the Assistant version.  If you think you might need to edit polyphonic material, i.e. a note within a chord, then you'll need the full monte: Editor.
Better than V-Vocal?  In terms of ease of use - miles better (IMHO of course...)

I bought Assistant from Audio Deluxe using the "Make An Offer" option. Got a very good deal!

I agree.... I have editor but if you have a limited budget, get one of the other levels according to needs and budget.

I can pretty much guarantee that they will send you offers to upgrade and probably at a savings.

Melodyne is worth the price. I can't imagine recording without it now.

I have both auto tune and melodyne - i am a major league bad singer!

Melodyne is much better. Auto-tune will give you more instant results but melodyne will give you better results with a bit more effort.

I have constructed new melodies using melodyne.

However if you want the over autotuned effect beloved of so many song then go for that!

I have Assistant and it does everything I need. the only thing you are giving up by not buyingt he more expensive versions are (1) the ability to correct a single note in a chord, which i would never use and (2) the ability to make automatic harmonies like with a TC Helicon unit.  Auto-generated harmonies are seldom that great outisde of a live situation, though.

I think Melodyne sounds much better than V-Vocal or Autotune, and is easier to use than V-Vocal.  (It also does a better auto-adjust of formants than V-Vocal.)   V-Vocal sounds phasey.

All that said, I have seen a demo of Autotune Evo and it looks really good in the demo are far as  features and usability go, but not sure it would be any better than Melodyne Assistant or that the features would be worth the price.

I have some crashes with Melodyne but I think that is more of a Sonar + Plug-in problem because I have the same issue with other VSTs and I have lots of crashes with V-Vocal—so not Melodyne's fault.

Ditto to everything above.   If you're looking for pure monophonic pitch correction, I'd go with Assistant (or even Essentials if really only need the basics).  If you want to with something that can also be a good creative tool, Editor is the way to go.    Even though ployphonic editing can be a bit gimmicky, it's still one of the coolest things...   And it can be used to *add* notes to a ployphonic performance, not just move notes.   Or move/add notes and change their formants, timing, etc.   Good stuff.
