One for Pedro on the Beeb tonight - Krautrock, The Rebirth of Germany

I suspect this can't be accessed in the US, but thought I'd mention it anyway;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/ipla...he_Rebirth_of_Germany/

Documentary looking at how a radical generation of musicians in bands like Neu!, Can, Faust and Kraftwerk created a new German musical identity out of the cultural ruins of war.

musical identity out of the cultural ruins of war.

Innit that what the Mersey Beat was?

Or was that a song about a gay on a riverboat?

OK, I did a comparative of the British to the German post-war music scenes by referencing the Mersey Beat sound.

The I made a vague reference to that Gerry and The Pacemakers song Ferry Cross The Mersey but turned it into a homophobic attempt at humor.

Now do you see what I did dere?

    I hope so.

I've been dying to find out who the bass player was in that band.

Interesting bit of Jethro Plastictoe trivia … Jethro Plastictoe was at the center of a Grammy controversy in ’89.  Metallica was a shoe-in for the hard rock/metal Grammy but the Academy, probably through ignorance, gave Metallica the boot and awarded the Grammy to Jethro Plastictoe.

… and another bit of trivia, in the 70’s, members of Jethro Plastictoe left to form the Plastic Toe-No band.

    Hi,

Not sure this is the same one ... I have to check from home ... but if it is, there are some magnificent things in there ... that are important and very special.

Right off the bat, the film starts with ... Jimi Hendrix ... who is one of the greatest influences for Krautrock, and I've often stated that Guru Guru's first 4 albums are what Jimi would have done if the silly American business was not so stuck up on blues and some other over rated stuff.

Very important words in there ... Edgar Froese explaining the time and place ... no past, no future ... and all we had was "now" ... and the music was a reflection of that moment in time.

The stuff around the famous music schools.

Holger talking about adding Damo Suzuki to the band. He was also an instructor and teach to the guitarist Michael Karoli ... how would you like to have a teach that knows how to show you ... freedom of expression ... and total free form. It's really hard to discuss this here at the CH, because too many of these folks have no idea, confidence or desire to try these off the wall moments and things. I get depressed when I get trashed for saying it, and I know this works and these examples are proof of what I state and will gladly help others do it and achieve -- if they have the heart, love, and desire to step away from the mirror for a minute to see ... the other side! The other side is not in the mirror ... because that is the same thing!

As it gets on, it gets into Faust ... which is nice and explains the free form stuff some and shows it. The stuff around Neu and Kraftwerk is not as great ... but you still get the feeling of it all.

Missing ... the larger/wider mention that rock music was not the only art that was expanding here ... there are many writers, film makers and artists, that were with these folks and also helped it come alive. Some known names out of that time and place. Peter Weiss, Peter Handke, Wim Wenders, werner Herzog ...

Superlative ... the classical musicians and professors talking about rock music, like they "saw" a new music, instead of some old, staid, boring, old lady sitting for a portrait! Weird, was hearing the Can drummer talk about ... "not repetitive enough" ... and I think this was said to help you stay tuned, until ... you found something that went here and there ... to work with. And CAN did that magnificently. So the repetition was a way to find the moment to explode and express. But this can be considered strange when so much of the "meditative" music was repetitious and subtle, rather than rely on mucial intervals and changes. I have not exactly defined this, and it would be one question I would ask, because it is either completely anti-meditative, or totally trying to specify that rock music could do something that classical music never achieved ... a meditative state!

The rest? ... up to you and your freedom. The 6th part has David Bowie talking about it and that one was damaged.

    Missing:
    - Helmut Hattler talking about drugs and the time and place with Guru Guru ... which is on various interviews around the net ... and he discusses some of their improvisations ... now what ? ... just do something ... anything ... and off to the races they were!

    - Popol Vuh and their main person Florian Fricke. Has a wonderful bit from an interview done by Archie Patterson that explains Werner Herzog and his choices of music by Popol Vuh ... it goes like this ... he would go into the closet grab some tapes and next week he would show up and say ... look I made a film with that music ... hilarious bit, but it shows you how some people get inspired!

    - Amon Duul's 2 growing up from Amon Duul 1 and making fun of the previous commune which was sex, drups and let's party ... and hteir first piece was called "Phallus Dei" which was a serious statement about what the communes were about. Renate states that some in the shows.

    - The Cozmic Courier stuff is not discussed, and specially Ash Ra Tempel and Minuel Gottsching. He deserves to be mentioned. The romantic and dreamy style as "sex'y" music, and believed at the time to be inspired by Tim Leary! The whole Tim Leary thing is bizarre, strange ... and yet the words are really with it ... but I have a feeling that he spent a lot of time in bed with many of their women and girlfriends and the only folks that are talking about are all quiet and not saying a whole lot, except that they were too ripped to know the difference. If that is the case, then, drugs do not hurt music and help people flow ideas really well. And in this case, it could be said that the women helped carry these really nice! Klaus Schulze still talks badly of these ... and it is a shame ... there are some wonderful things in there.

A few more bits here and there ... which help define a lot of music, and puts in perspective a lot of German arts history in the late 60's and early 70's and is the reason why it is remembered. Powerful, strong, and independent ... and magnificent!

    Hi,

    No, it wasn't that one.

    Hi,

    "... No, it wasn't that one. ... "

This one is a 6 part special around the tube and the 6th hour is damaged ... probably because it has David Bowie and he didn't get paid for it! ... the turkey!

I'll try to catch that one tonight ... if I remember to do so! But this one is magnificent and it is detailed and worth while because these guys talk about their craft ... not Bapu's or Stummy's fame around here!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
