    Welcome to the forum.
What operating system are you using?
Is it a 64-bit operating system?
What sound card or audio interface are you using?
Are you using a USB microphone?
What Driver Mode are you using? (Options>Audio>Driver Mode at the top of the SHS 7 screen).

You really make usa guess a lot by not giving ANY info that would be needed for answering..
What Greg asks is usually necessary info whenever you ask a technical question.

Assuming you are recording something with microphone, your description sounds like a feedback loop. How do you monitor? If you record with  a microphone, you must not have any loudspeaker monitoring on. Or do you have a laptop integrated mic that's left on?

The level of the recorded signal is adjusted in the soundcard, SONAR has no role in it.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
