Feels like Winter

This is a request for other ears. (comments) on this original song.
I'm obviously still a recording newbie and any impressions and perspectives will help.
Particularly if they are specific (EG add 4 db of 2500 on the vox)
Thanks in advance.
Glenn

PS tweaked per some of the advice and reloaded.
PPS does the bass sit ok? I have new monitors and am unsure if I am over or under doing levels.

what a soulful singing voice...  very cool tune too... some timing issues, but overall, very impressive... this piece cries out for a drum track... well done...

Hey, Glenn, it's in the 100's here in KC, and this made me yearn for snow.  It's a lovely song, and your performance is very smooth.  Since you are asking for specifics, here's what stood out to me.  It sounds like you're doubling the lead vox, and I think you did a fine job with it.  Yet, the overall vocal sound is a bit thin on my speakers, which could easily be corrected by adding some body to one of the vocals.  You could do it with boosting the low mids via EQ, or a little tube saturation from ProChannel.  If you are doubling, just treat one of the tracks, and don't be afraid to boost the overall lead vocal a bit so it sits more on top of the mix instead of being blended in with the instruments.  Other than that, well done.

    All the best,
    Lynn

    Thanks Frank
I am currently going thru your soundclick list. Great stuff well played and recorded.
Thanks for the heads up on the timing. I'll look for them.
    And yes -drums..somehow.
I have a DR880 but it's not the same thing.
I need to learn how to do a track in Sonar yet.

    Thanks Lynn.
    You nailed my biggest concern.
I'm too close to the Vox and find it hard to judge.
The Vox is a blend of the best parts of 4 takes.
Then I used the PC preset for "Male lead vocal" and then added some vx64 to attempt to fatten it up.
    I'll definitely try your ideas
    Thanks so much

Nice song! The performances are great. It could be the MP# conversion, but it sounds like a chorus effect is running over the top of the entire track.

Any comments on the bass levels?
They are fairly obvious here but I'm not sure my new monitors are balanced right yet. (I have a 10" sub with 6" Rokits )

That is one well written song! I liked it a lot

Doesn't it always feel like winter in Canada?

Vocals are sung very well. But I can hear a hiss whenever vocals come in? I personally will take performance any day over pristine quality. But I did notice it and thought I'd mention it.

After listening again I'm not sure where the hiss is coming from? Sounds almost like a gate is opening/closing on a noisy track. Perhaps it's just in soundclicks conversion? I'm listening with headphones. Perhaps this is not as evident through monitors?

Listening on Soundclick as Soundcloud link is not working  - I agree with Scotty that the does seem to be something a little distracting going on - I think its maybe the vocal effects you have used - almost sounds like you have a track playing that isn't meant to be at times or maybe a muted track where a send is still activated.

Guitar sounds nice though and you have a very distinctive voice - in a good way.

Lol, the weather is perfect about 6 months of the year here on the West coast (Vancouver Island)
sunny, 75 deg. days, 68 deg. nights.
The other 6 mo it rains..

Thanks for the heads up on the hiss. I'm not hearing it yet so have to adjust either my ears or my monitors.

I love the song. It's really a good bit of writing.

I hear poping here and there. I think it's the vox where it happens. I think your on the right track with the mixing. Just keep comparing it to good recordings of the like. Croce, Taylor, Mason and other like them.

    Well done!!!

Cool song, great performance.  Nice voice.  Some drums woulc add, some congas on this would have a nice feel too.

The lead guitar might be a tad too loud.  Everything is clear but some mild compression might tame some of the imbalance issuse.

Did you use mastering on this?  Ozone or something like that?

Cool tune.  Again, I like vocals and the guitar work is really nice too.  The lyrics are good too.

    I like it.
I have tennitus as well, its a curse when mixing.  If I get cymbals to where I can hear them.. they are way too loud.  Since one ear is worse than the other, I always switch my headphones around on preliminary mixes and listen both ways to make sure nothing is suffering from my worst ear.

Ha, yes I did back off on the rhythm trax which brought out the vox and lead.
No mastering yet this is just the premaster mix tho it is all sent to a master buss with some comp and limiter of course.
And yes I agree with the conga idea.
    Thanks Daryl

a pleasant listen. graceful and soothing. has echoes of Clapton's more tender tracks and James Taylor. i'm hearing that hiss though; sounds almost analog-ish. maybe you could shelf it off at the top etc...

Crap! If I can't hear the hiss it's my Tinnitus masking it.
Would a frequency analyser show this up?
I'm going to have to find some way to ensure my stuff doesn't all have this.
I'd be very grateful if someone was to find the frequency that I can't hear.
