Using Piano Roll with VST

Hello, everyone. I'm trying to record audio from a VST plugin. I can manage as far as getting the VST itself to sound within Sonar LE, but when I enter notes into the Piano Roll for the track I have the VST set as the input for, there's no audio. Also, if I then play the VST using its built-in keyboard, Sonar Le's volume bars light up but there's still no audio. I can hear the VST again if I reset the track's input, but I would like to use the Piano Roll, if that is possible.
