I am having trouble hearing how the distortion tones you use lend themselves to what I think you are trying to express. It sounds like a blanket of distortion and instead of adding emphasis to certain parts it seems to just lay over everything. Most of us tune out constant signals such as that, it's part of our defense mechanism.
I think your songs have solid structure and the lyrics are exceptional.
I would not offer critique like this unless I thought you were serious about your desire to make your voice heard. I think you are, so I'll offer my opinion a bit more frankly than I usually do.
I think you should take the notion of distortion and it's potential for expressiveness a little more seriously. I think you should explore more subtle use of it so that it is more effective at seeming expressive.
I also think you should tighten up the timing on the "heavy" parts. The songwriting, composition, whatever you call it, is heavy... and if you can get the kick, bass, and rhythm guitar to sync up better it will sound as heavy as I think you imagined it.
I usually prefer to celebrate the best parts I hear in other people's music, but I sense you are a serious person and you are going to work hard to get your songs heard so I am stepping out of my comfort zone and telling you some stuff I'd normally just keep to myself because that's how I am.
I hope you'll consider what I wrote and see if any of it might be useful for what you, personally, have in mind.
all the very best,
mike
