Beautymärker [with Joe Perry-ish guitar outro]

quick scratch demo of a work in progress. playing around with some recording techniques. in the vocals in the pre-chorus i'm yelling into the pickups of one of my Fender Jaguars.  drums are a blend of acoustic kit and Roland Vkit, with a few loops too. think their presence/levels need to be balanced more. using an overdriven AKG Perception 440 mic in vox verses. the guitar lead outro has shades of Joe Perry. guess maybe that's why i subconsciously broke into the "Sweet Emotion" lick where i fade out mix.

Words & Music by Daren Thomas Turner

I think that I discovered the secret to god’s universe
Beyond the planets, comets and the stars
Floats a giant Sharpie marker orbiting the vanities
Marking all the earthbound beauty models…

Beautymärker…mark my face…mark my space
Beautymärker…mark my place…mark my fate

My magic marker is of escritorial ecstasy
Indelible like squid ink on your soul
Descending from the heavens as Orpheus intoxicated
Drunken orgy writing on the walls…

Beautymärker…mark my face…mark my space
Beautymärker…mark my world…mark my grave

Oh don’t you go away from here before you know if…

This is yet another fantastic song by you.  I was reminded more of STP than Joe Perry, but what the heck?  You have mastered the Seattle sound of the 90's much like some of us older songwriters have spent much of our lives trying to emulate George Martin.  As usual, your lyrics are super and oh, so original.  Overall, the mix was a little murky, but I have no doubt that in the final version it will be on target.  Keep us posted with this one.

    All the best,

hey thanks Lynn. funny you mention STP as I was actually inspired by Scott Weiland's singing into the pickup of a guitar in the intro to 'Dead & Bloated'.  the mix here is kinda a mess; i'm dealing with 2 different drum environments (a live room, and vKit) and some of the guitars are mic'd [Mesa Boogie Dual Recto & 4x12 cabinet] and some are direct out. the Joe Perry reference is more at the guitar lead outro, where I'm noodling around in a slop pentatonic then rip off his 'Sweet Emotion' outro lead lick at the very end.  i wrote this tune after going to a model/runway show and insane afterparty in Miami Beach. Miami has the greatest fake people population in the states, more than LA.

I really dig the tune, the riff the vocals and melody were spot on. Unique vocal capture fits like a glove. Drums sound massive. Mix is a little bright .Other than that a great sounding mix to my ears.

I am having trouble hearing how the distortion tones you use lend themselves to what I think you are trying to express. It sounds like a blanket of distortion and instead of adding emphasis to certain parts it seems to just lay over everything. Most of us tune out constant signals such as that, it's part of our defense mechanism.

I think your songs have solid structure and the lyrics are exceptional.

I would not offer critique like this unless I thought you were serious about your desire to make your voice heard. I think you are, so I'll offer my opinion a bit more frankly than I usually do.

I think you should take the notion of distortion and it's potential for expressiveness a little more seriously. I think you should explore more subtle use of it so that it is more effective at seeming expressive.

I also think you should tighten up the timing on the "heavy" parts. The songwriting, composition, whatever you call it, is heavy... and if you can get the kick, bass, and rhythm guitar to sync up better it will sound as heavy as I think you imagined it.

I usually prefer to celebrate the best parts I hear in other people's music, but I sense you are a serious person and you are going to work hard to get your songs heard so I am stepping out of my comfort zone and telling you some stuff I'd normally just keep to myself because that's how I am.

I hope you'll consider what I wrote and see if any of it might be useful for what you, personally, have in mind.

    all the very best,
    mike

hey thanks Grant & Mike for feedback. much appreciated :)

& yea Mike I very much understand what you are saying & have gratitude for the meticulous explanations; I have to concur with you and upon re-record and re-mixing I am taking what you have to say very seriously. I'm really just a studio neophyte getting his Logic legs so I learn things as I go along. Some fail, some work, some have potential etc.  I do like trying to make things sound different & enjoy experimenting.  Not sure why I have this penchant for distortion; the distortion in the verse vocal here is simply an overdriven mic through a tube preamp. Maybe I can tame it down, but there is indeed the part of me that likes it a lot so perhaps finding a balance is key.  The drums and guitars are basically scratch tracks, as i said the drums are a blend of acoustic live room and Vkit & some samples too, so concatenating them together has its limitations. But I like the overall feel of this so again my hat is off to you for pointing out areas of improvement. I've showed this to a lot of people & the feedback has been diverse. Some love it and others have the same problems you are bringing up. Either way it's cool.  I'm not here to impress anyone I'm just interested in pushing the envelope where I can and to make some honest art if possible.

Hi Daren, are you sure it's loud enough ; )  I'm most cerftainly not your target audience so forgive me if this sounds very stupid, do people actually listen to this kind of music at full volume ? I can sort of understand this being fun to play and for what I know you play it very well . Sorry for not getting it ; )

@ Rick - ;p lol it's all good. i think my ears are shot out from standing next to my drummer's crash cymbals on stage for a decade.
@ Scott - cool. might pull down the distortion a bit next pass.

    cheers & thanks :)
