Crass Commercialism...

I haven't posted anything here in a while, but it's still one of the best places to get an honest critique!
 
I just finished up some new stuff and would really appreciate some feedback, if anyone's interested. Just be aware my aim here isn't 'art' but crass commercialism, lol. Essentially, I'd like to know if I'm producing stuff that can make money. (And if anyone has any advice or pointers on how to do so, by all means...)

    I just listened to all three songs, and I found much to like in them.  They're all catchy songs with good hooks and vocals.  The only thing that stood out to me was that they are all rather narrow in the panning.  In fact, the first song almost sounded mono.  I realize a lot of modern producers are going in that direction, but I'm old school enough that I like a wider stereo spectrum, especially when I'm listening to tunes in my car.  These would be OK if your audience only used ear buds.  Also, the drums and bass could be beefed up a little, IMO, but this isn't a major point.  All in all, good songwriting and good performances.

    big city dreamer is the best of the three..  Making money from music is far more about marketing than, "if the music is good."  

    I like this big city dreamer track though..   This big city dreamer track is the best mixed of the three..   

    to my ears..  IMHO ofcourse..

    that could be, exactly what I was hearing..  I didn't catch that!  nice one ...   after doing a quick listen again, "wow Lynn, nice ear."  :-)

    I liked the sound of the second tune far better than the others...
    All 3 are well done though...

    Lynn, I see what you mean about the narrow stereo field. I'll have to take a look at the project file again and see what I did. I thought I had the guitars panned 65%L, 65%R and 30%R on "Should I", but there were a lot of late nights of incessant knob turning so who knows what I actually did in the end, lol. I like a wide stereo field too, so I'll definitely look into that. I'm glad you liked the songs overall, though.
     
    Linear, "Big City" is my fave of the set too. I know what you mean about marketing. Was never my strong suit (or any of my suits, lol), so maybe it's not in the cards for me :(

    I figured out what the problem was with the stereo panning on "Should I". I had all the guitar tracks (3) panned fairly wide but for some reason it still sounded narrow.
     
    After several hours of frustration I realized the amps were all panned center. I wouldn't have thought that would make a diff if it was set for stereo output and the tracks feeding it were panned out, but I guess it does (still learning the engineering/mixing side of things here).
     
    Anyway, it sounds much wider now and I appreciate you pointing it out to me. That's what I get for not mixing with the headset.
