Recommendations for a very basic (but good) sound card?

I'm planning to get a new computer soon, so I figured I'd get a new soundcard while I'm at it.
Can anyone recommend a good, basic card?

I don't need lots of inputs or anything.  All of my music is done via MIDI and occasional audio loops.  I have an M-Audio MIDI controller, and I use it to play various softsynths like DimensionPro, Garritan Personal Orchestra, etc in Sonar HS.  So, in other words, I'm not trying to record any "real" instruments like guitars or even vocals.

I'm currently using a Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme, which actually suits my purposes pretty well, but I'm wondering if there's something better out there that doesn't cost an arm & a leg (maybe something with lower latency, and/or better recording capabilities).  Also, I'm currently on Vista, but my new computer would have Windows 7, so it would need to be compatible with that.
Thanks for any suggestions!

are u using ASIO? if not, your soundcard already supporst that, and you wil get latency reduction to the point at which its not an issue just by using that. any other card u buy will be using that, so unless u need better mic preamps, or other such functionality, i wouldnt suggest upgrading to something marginally beter. pretty much anything u buy will be external nowdays, so dont worry about factoring it into your build. but again, since you're just using midi and VSTs etc, id just use asio on the card you have
