X1 loses midi input - solved

An increasingly annoying problem: Start up computer, start Sonar and it can't find midi input. Control midi from VS 100 is still there. I close Sonar and restart computer, restart Sonar and midi input has come back usually. Doesn't help if I only restart Sonar. Reinstalled VS-100 driver, didn't help either. Any idea? Anyone?

I am not clear if you are saying that the USB/midi input is not recognized by the computer/OS, or that it is recognized by the computer but not by Sonar. The two problems have quite different differential diagnoses. If you are not clear, see it it is recognized by midi-ox.

Make sure the USB cable is plugged into the computer and not a USB hub. That can affect the reliability of the connection.

Thanks slartabartfast and daveney. USB sound card (VS 100) recognized by OS/computer and X1 but not midi-in by X1. Audio works fine in both X1 and windows as well as the control function from VS-100 in X1. VS-100 is connected via a USB-PCI-card with four USB-ports.

Unusual. Bad cable perhaps? Either that or the VS-100 MIDI is not configured right. Sonar usually sees all MIDI inputs regardless of how many.

In that case it is extremely unlikely that there is an electrical connection/USB problem. All the data is traveling over the same USB connection, and audio (being a dense data stream) would be more sensitive to disruption of that transmission than anything else. Anything coming out of the VS100 via the midi cable is just data, and it is apparently getting through.

I am still managing to be confused. Where is the midi input missing that you expect it to be? Where is the midi data coming from (a keyboard connected to the VS100?, midi controller data?).

The midi data coming from the keyboard connected to the VS100 - correct! Midi control data still working! Could it be the cable between my Fatar midi piano and VS-100!? Wonder why it usually settles when I restart the computer?

Well, I have the same issue... and this happens randomly.... a real PITA.  My cables work fine and I am not using a HUB.

To me it happens randomly too Jim. I can't see any pattern or logic when it occurs at all...

Just now I started my computer and opened Sonar - no midi, not even midi control from VS-100. Restarted computer and all midi features are there (midi in/out, control). But I have to manually select the right control surfaces in Preferences/Midi/Control Surfaces...

It seems to that you have a USB problem. Is your computer USB 2.0 or 3.0?

Did you reset the Fatar? Mine occasionally needs to be reset.

Thanks daveny. My computer has it all both USB2 and 3. I use USB2 for VS-100. I am not sure what you mean with resetting Fatar? I have a main AC-switch to all devices (computer, pc-screen, preamps, speakers and the Fatar SL-880). I turn on the main switch, turn on on computer go in to Sonar and...no midi in now 2/3 start ups.

I also have a Fatar SL-880. To reset it, press and hold down the Up, Down and Enter/Edit buttons while powering it up and then release them. It will wipe out any setting you had, but it resets the keyboard back to factory settings.

I asked about the USB 3 because I have read in the forum about people having problems with USB 3. If the reset doesn't work, then search the forum on USB3.

Did a reset of my Fatar Midi-keyboard but the problem persisted. In BIOS I disabled USB3, on-board soundcard and BlueTooth Controller. This resulted in loss of wireless USB-network adapter (I swear it's USB2!). The Blue Tooth Controller was reinstalled during start up I guess due to plug'n play, which is funny because I disabled it in BIOS... Switched to another USB-port for the WiFi-connector and the internet came back. Opened Sonar and there they were, both MIDI-inputs and outputs as well as MOIDI-controller, powered down, did a couple of restarts and YES still there, solid as a rock. Keep my fingers crossed. Thanks everyone for advices!

Hmm. ASUS have an interesting BIOS-update with among other things improved USB-stabilty. Sounds just exactly what I need eh. I'll flash BIOS and set all values to default and report back if you're interested.
