Yeah see, Reece...I only use the asio4all drivers on my systems that don't have any other cards attached. I'd never run asio4all with cards on the machine that had their own asio drivers. But for my little test boxes and the service boxes I run for renders etc, that's really all I need. Jan: Correct...if you have a good card, there's no reason for the Realtek. My point was...if you don't have the money for a card or the pc you are using isn't one you normally use for recording, the Realtek will work just fine in spite of what people seem to say about it all the time. Ok, it's not a card that any of us should use if we are serious recording guys or even serious hobby guys....but, if you decide to use one, it's only going to record what you put in and playback what was recorded. I do notice a few differences in the sound compared to my others I use, but not enough to where I would hold back showing someone something simply "because I used a Realtek". :) -Danny

Beagle NOTE: ASIO4ALL does not use the ASIO drivers of the soundcard with native ASIO drivers. ASIO4ALL is a WDM wrapper. so if you're using ASIO4ALL to run your soundcard which has native ASIO drivers, you're not using that soundcard in ASIO driver mode, you're using it in WDM driver mode but fooling the host into thinking you're using ASIO drivers. Exactly, so it exposes the WDM driver as an alternative ASIO one which you can then use alongside the interfaces native ASIO driver. The reason it 'looks' agressive is because Sonar will take that last ASIO driver to be installed (in this case A4ALL) as the new default, hence you'll have to disable all the entries for it in Sonar unless you want them to take precedence. I know how it works and what it is doing, like I said I use it to aggregate the WDM driver to use alongside the native ASIO one. I don't have any issues with it at all in use ever, but as you say there maybe some system specifics involved with different setups that could cause problems. If it caused problems I wouldn't be using it. The thing with ASIO is if you set the output of one application to your ASIO driver when you load Sonar your native driver will be in use and be unavailable. If you set it to ASIO4ALL you can load Sonar and record the output from A4ALL into Sonar without needing Rewire or any other audio bridging solution. It's very useful particualarly if you use an app such as Reason that doesn't host VST's or if you want to play a synth 'live' into Sonar rather than record the midi. If you want to mix or arrange on your laptop while you are on the run without having to lug round an interface then it's a must have.

OK, now that I have it sorted out I'll explain what I was after. Believe it or not it was all about making a video. I wanted to do a screen capture of me talking over SONAR (just like everyone else does). I have Snagit 5.0, but it would not capture SONAR and my headset mic simultaneously. Danny hinted at maybe using my on board sound card. A few days earlier I had disabled my Realtek (in an attempt to fix a different problem with sound. Albeit, that was not the problem I left the disabled Relatek alone). Needless to say I have it enabled now but it was not the solution to he video problem. Danny suggested (via describing how he does it) to use a hardware mixer and I was going to try that but my tenacity got the better of me and I went in search of a software solution. Lo and behold I find a $40 software solution. Debut Video Capture Software by NCH. As long as I run my Cakewalk UA-1G in WDM mode in SONAR I can run SONAR and talk into my headset mic at the same time and it is all captured in a video. Not sure why ASIO mode does not work but I have the solution for an investment of $40.

You could have done that with ASIO4ALL, which is free... But I'm glad you got it done.

I never have had any luck with onboard soundcards. I'm sure there's good realteks and bad realteks. Cheaper ones that aren't up to the task. I used ASIO 4 all on my first off the shelf computer. I never could get a usable latency out of it using WDM drivers much less get a stable recording. One day someone will make a computer with professional inputs and outputs, a real BNC, and real ADAT.
