Just some BS....
..some may have seen the video of my prototype pickup winder--I removed the video because I used some DP music and didn't want any hassles but anyway... The next step was to incorporate a counter. One needs to know the number of wraps. It's been a hassle but I may have come up with a solution. I'm mentioning it because I think it's cool and just maybe some others here may get ideas to use it for something else. One way that many "beginners" use is a magnetic switch ( like in security systems) and a calculator. There are problems with that and I decided to move on. ( it is the cheapest? Not the most trustworthy in high rpm's)...or so I hear. Optical is another but the one I bought is hand held and the button has to be held...no "on" switch. I think it will be good to use to confirm whatever counter I come up with. Ok! Here's my newest brainstorm.... It dawned on me that computers have a calculator....so I bought a cheap little mouse and tapped into the left-click button with two wires left sticking out. I plugged the mouse in and BINGO....every time I touched the two wires...yep...the cursor over the "equal" button would add another count. I will be on vacation next week and hope to build the winder WITH a counter and make another video. Now the reason I'm not waiting to tell you is because....in my mind that litte "trick" could be cool......it could be easy to trigger anything you wanted to trigger on your PC. Cool huh? Well it's new to me and I still have a stupid grin on my face like I just got a gold medal. lol. Ideas? That would be fun to hear...

I like trip meters. So a little pip on the rotating part strikes a lever on a static counter on each rotation. Very reliable. I like mechanical things.

Jon I'm still going to embed a magnet on the bobbin (the piece that the pickup will mount) and the magnetic reed switch to trigger via mouse lol. I don't why I'm so darn excited to see it in action.

The real BS Craig is my day starts at 4:30 am and I just now get to sit down and take a breath before trying to get some sleep. I've been rebuilding my recliner - it was a gift from my late daughter 18 years ago and there isn't a tear on it. I think this is the 4th major repair and probably the last. And did get a little done on the winder. I'm sure not saying the computer/mouse was my idea...I'v read so much and have so many ideas that I'm sure mine is a mix of what stuck with me or what I thought I could make work. Wookiee I hope it works and hope I have the touch or at least I'll get to find out. Fun and desire Jon...you've always been great at helping me get it right. :) ....good night.

Very promising, Spacey. I love that kind of stuff. I used to be able to do that sort of thing--part of my job used to be building test equipment for computer cards. I just know that Bapu is going use it to find a way to post shameless plugs all over the place. Good luck with it.

I was just recanting your thread title. If you want to get higher tech, you could get something like a z-pulse sensor or similar from Automation Direct or Chicago Sensor. These usually become a requirement if you start to go over 50 RPS (which I doubt you ever will approach).

I know. I didn't have a problem with it. No reason for me to shoot high Craig...I don't even know if it's something I'll continue doing until after I've tried a couple. I don't plan on winding for anybody but myself so no reason to get carried away with it. Low-tech, cheap, fun with great results sounds fine to me.

Back to the topic...what was it? Oh yeah.... The magnetic reed swith wired to "=" of a mouse to trigger PC calculator to count wraps worked...but only with very slow rpm's. I don't know exactly but somewhere around 120 beats per minute (lol) it would stop counting. Way to slow to be of any use for my winder. I'm moving on to a laser rpm/tach meter.

That's cool Mike. I enjoy sharing my endeavors and glad there's interest for others. To use the laser it requires a piece of reflective tape on the shaft and it needs a black background so I'm waiting for the paint to dry. Should be able to test it soon and if it works I'll make a short video. I sure hope it does...I'm out of ideas...er cheap ideas.

Is there an option that is easy, if not costly? I was thinking there must be some optical device that is made just for it. Maybe that's what you're already speaking about? best, mike

Spacey, did you try to increase the buffer size for the mouse? Back in the DOS days I remember that you could overflow keyboard and mouse input. There was a buffer setting and everything. I suspect it's as easy as doing a tune up on a modern car, once you identify the engine. Called my buddy that makes pickups and he tells me his winder has a mechanical counter like something off an old bicycle. I was very surprised.
Regards, John I want to make it clear that I am an Eedjit. I have no direct, or indirect, knowledge of business, the music industry, forum threads or the meaning of life. I know about amps. Mike the optical device is the laser rpm/tach device...it's very cool and would be great for setting idling speed or such on equipment/motors and I can use it to varify a counter if I get one that works... I just finished checking it and it's doing it's thing fine...but it just tells me how fast it's spinning. No John I didn't. I didn't think of that. Mechanical may be were I wind-up. lol I just ordered a Red Lion digital counter- 6 digits. Since I have the magnet in place and it's so easy to mount the magnetic reed switch I'm going to give that a try. About a $50.00 dollar shot I've been surfing a lot trying to find the best way out of my mess and man folks sure don' t like that winder StuMac sells. 400 dollars of junk I guess. It also seems that they don't have the problems I have either. I even found a guy that said he used the mouse/PC/calculator...I'm going to see if he'll tell me how to make it work. What a trip it's been. All the BS and I think if I get it counting it'll be time to replace those little bearings LOL. So it's- check on the mouse and wait for the lion.
