Music Hosting Sites

Are there any hosting sites, free or otherwise, that can upload and download CD quality songs?
Maybe one that offers the buyer/downloader to choose which format they want?

Bandcamp looks good but it doesn't appear to be capable of allowing downloads of 16/44.1 .wav files.
They do seem to offer downloads of AIFF and FLAC. Are these pretty much equivalent to .wav and will CD players play these formats, or will that depend on the disc player?

Mike

Ps. What's for dinner? I'm getting kind of hungry?

I'm gonna get a Soundcloud account but I don't know what kind of files it can handle. The stuff other folks put up on it sound alright to me.

Soundcloud seems to be a place to upload wave files. The free account if still the same allows 2 hours of songs in whatever format you want (well, maybe *.mp3 or wave files.

Soundcloud is pretty cool. You can upload pretty much anything, also high resolution audio. When you play it back on the profile it will playback some compressed format but when you download the track you get the original filetype.

If you are after a place to sell your tracks then I'd look elsewhere. Not sure what's best then. For just hosting/upload/download you can't beat Soundcloud IMO.

yes, soundcloud allows wave file uploads and the free acct allows 2 hours of music regardless of the format.

However be aware that all streaming is reduced to 128kbps, so the download will be a wave file, but if you stream it (click the play button on the transport on the website) then it will only stream at 128k.

that's the way it is with ALL websites.  I don't know why it's limited like that.  I've done some testing to confirm that and I believe bitflipper also has done testing on that.

Wow! Is it that low?? I didn't know that but thanks for enlightening me

Well, probably a band width thing. But as long as the tracks are downloadable then your fans can just download it if they want to hear it with better quality.

That's going to be my excuse at least

I haven't tested sites like box.net.  I hope those are better, but soundcloud, soundclick, reverbnation, all those that stream are streaming at 128k.

Box.net, dropbox.com and all of those streams the actual file I believe so that is an idea. However, they are not hosting services in the same way as Soundcloud, Reverbnation etc. You don't get a nice profile and all that.

But they are great when sending stuff to master houses etc

that's what I was thinking - was that the actual file gets streamed from them.  they're more like a depsository as opposed to a hosting site.

I do have a bandcamp account and I have put some music on it, but I just never really "got into it." and have pretty much abandoned it.  not sure why - it's decent.  It just never really appealled to me I guess.

I checked out Bandcamp some years ago. Didn't get into it either. Reminded me more of a social network

I have a Soundcloud account already.
I didn't know that people that download your songs get the original file. That's good to know.

I also signed up for Bandcamp and I too get the feeling that it seems geared more towards collaboration.

WTH it was free to check out.

Do you guys use the free Soundcloud or have you upgraded?
And if you upgraded, what to and what are the benefits?
I've read the comparisons but wonder if there's more to what they list.

I recently paid for the lowest level of soundcloud's paid version so that I could replace versions of songs without deleting and re-uploading them as new (so that my stats would remain with the new version from the old version).  it's only like $20 for a year for the lowest version, I think?

you also get more space to upload stuff with each version and the higher versions than what I paid for also have more "stats" available - which would be OK to have but I'm not going to pay that much for them.
