What is most likely reasons music clip in Sonar 2 does not start?

Have not used Sonar in a while. Just reloaded it to do easy editing job of aligning dozens of short music clips into one hour-long stereo track with the most basic mastering. Was surprised to find that on my new laptop (Windows 7, Pentium processor, 62 bit, 2 gig RAM, 2 gighertz speed - or fast enough) the old Directx 8.1 loaded and Sonar 2 itself loaded. BUT after importing a clip into Sonar and hitting play you see the play button alight and then the off button alight a millisecond later - no sound, no forward movement. Wavefiler claimed it successfully profiled the soundcard (some built-in laptop card that otherwise plays sound fine through Windows programs like Media Player, etc). In Options/Audio we have: Playback Timing Master "none" (and no other option possible), 4 buses, 1 Mains, 20 Driver Bit Depth (doesn't help to change this to 16 or 24), Sampling Rate 44100 Hz, Audio sampling rate 20 (doesn't help to change to 16), Buffer Size on fast (can't change it). So I am not sure how to get this started unless despite appearances Sonar 2 will no longer work on modern versions of Windows, which would be a shame but time to chuck it. Any final recommendations old Cakewalk devotees? You understand Sonar was my other spouse so I am sad to see it doesn't love me anymore (actually, I was married to two women, the other being CoolEdit96 - that one won't even load on Windows 7 at all!) Try right-clicking the SONAR icon and select Troubleshoot Compatibility. This may set SONAR 2 to work in a compatibility mode, probably XP SP 2. You may also get a message, "Incompatible Software".
Also set it to Run As Administrator.
Open your sound card's preferences and see if you can change it's bit rate to 16- or 24-bit, then change SONAR to match.
Set the Driver Mode in SONAR to MME.
It's possible that it will never run correctly, though.

Thanks 57Gregy. I tried doing those rick-click things and changing Sonar and the laptop's soundcard to 16 bit no go. Thanks for trying though. I suspect Sonar 2 simply won't work with Windows 7. My Sonar has finally seen its day. In the meantime, though, I fooled around with Audacity. It is actually a pretty decent mastering program - I managed to get almost everything done on it. The only thing my Sonar would have done better is Equalize - gently heighten bass, whereas Audacity has this Bass Boost that is not up to Sonar parity. Maybe it is time to kiss my Sonar 2 finally and sadly goodbye! Danny

Assuming that "62 bits" in the opening post means "64".
Is it W7 that is the problem or the 64 bits? There is no 64 bit versions of SONAR 2, is there?? Or has Cakewalk been THAT much ahead of its time :o)
I mean, is there even a compatibility mode to run as 32 bit app inside 64 bit a OS in a version that old?

How valuable is your time? Audacity is ok and if it works for you then stick with it. You do have upgrade options in the CW family. SONAR Essentials is less than $100 and currently qualifies for free upgrade to the upcoming version. Given how long you have milked your SONAR 2, an upgrade should last you for another 10 years or so.
