Olympics - the Closing Ceremony
Elbow 'One Day Like This' - inspired choice. Kaiser Chiefs doing 'Pinball Wizard' - fantastic. George Michael and Annie Lennox...doing anything at all.. ....NO.

The more she feigns concern while imploring me to part with my cash, the less likely I am to oblige. And in all fairness to the old bugger, George "I Merv Hughes" Michael has actually inspired me... ...to buy a new razor. Still, it could be worse. They might dig up the Sp1ce Girls.... As if to emphasise that everything inspiring and truly worthwhile had already happened during the actual games. All the closing ceremony lacked for the total cringe factor was an appearance of the ol' guvnor 'is cockerny self, Dick van Dyke. I'm taking up hurling for the next few days...

Muse almost made it worth watching on their own. Pure gothic melodrama, and they certainly showed up for work! They got the gold from me tonight.

The closing ceremony just finished for me. I don't have the works to express how much I've been impressed from the start to the finish-but I'll try... Excellent. For 17 days our world was a better place and the host was pure gold. My hats off and my thanks to all of England and all involved for a truely remarkable performance. Ace.

Brilliant games, awsome opening/closing shows. Several OG veterans, journalists and such, in Finland have already commented that these games went right to the top their Best OG ever-list. Relaxed, joyful athmosphere and absolutely unbelievable audience. I couldn't help remembering the Moscow games when, for example, during pole vault final the audience started booing to a french (??) competitor who was concentrating for his performance. The lighting of the Olympic Flame in Moscow is still my favourite among all the OGs I've seen, though. It was really brilliantly done. When I saw The Who start I was a bit worried. Roger Daltreys voice has been in miserable condition for so long, but to my great relief and joy the performance was good. ****e Girls was actually a good choice. Most of the athletes were in their early teens when ****e Girls was HOT, so I can imagine that was a YIPPEE-experience to many, many of them. The same goes with Take That. (Funny. What kind of a dirty word is S - P - I - C as it gets censored?)

daryl1968 Eric Idle - brill I will second that! Did you notice the BBC commentator after "Wish You Where Here". "That was Ed Sheeran, the Floyd's Nick Mason, Richard Jones from The Feeling and somebody from Genesis." I enjoyed Elbow, Muse and the Who. And for what it was, Jessie J (who otherwise got far too much exposure) and Queen worked better than you would expect.

Uh-oh - it's barely over and the Brits are already reverting to their grouchy, curmudgeonly selves. That said, in fairness to Strummy, he never stopped. ;) FWIW I thought that like the opening it was spectacular and remarkably well done. Though some of the musical acts were not to my taste, they were on for such short times that there was enough to look at to amuse myself until they'd gone. The technical side of things was brilliantly executed, must be a strange feeling fo all those invoved now that it's over. Great success for them, but what now ?

the first half was a bit rubbish, tbh, every song was downbeat and sorrowful, but the second bit worked better - agreed the Kaiser Chiefs were good, as were Muse, The Who, Take That and the Spice Girls (yeah i was shocked too). WHoever thought Brian May doing guitar solo was a good idea needs shooting, Jessie J has a great voice, Freddie Mercury reminded us what we missed. the Floyd without Waters or Gilmour is not Floyd. Not a patch on the opening ceremony, all i would say is a) where was the celebration of our amazing classical music history (other than Salut D'Amour by Elgar there was nada) and b) why wasn't there one of Maiden, Priest, Purple, Sabbath or Zep represented? overall a triumph of a games though, we CAN do these things, y'see!

Absolutely stellar review Mark. That certainly describes the show I watched to a tee. I watched it about 3 hours after it happened courtesy of the + button so my moaning above was a bit premature. It didn't really get going until 'Disco Dad' (Fat Boy Slim) put in an appearance, like you say not of the awe inspiring standard of the opening but it kept rolling.

I am not sure how it was for you guys in other parts of the world but for me here in Australia I believe we got fed a very bad mix of the Closing Ceremony. In most of the pop music the music was too low and the vocals almost non existent just this distant room sound like open mikes in the stadium. Very bad. Only parts of it sounded OK and just OK. It does not matter if backing tracks were used or people are playing live all the signals are available and of very high quality so a very punchy mix was possible. A great engineer and team would have pulled it together in time. It would have made everyone sound a little better as well. Imagine some classy reverbs being used on some of the singers. Even pitch correction on the lead vocals! Someone did not take the audio quality way far enough and needs smacking. Visually it looked fantastic and great audio would have been perfect for it. It should have left that country sounding like a big fat kick ass pristine mix. It may have in other parts so please let me know if there was a better mix somewhere.

No offense meant; I've seen both of those words in posts here meaning 'raccoon' and 'mechanical holding device', but they are also derogatory terms not censored by the forum software.

whoever that girl was that sung the queen song really sucked. i dig annie lennox, singing just about anything. she's got a great rock and roll voice most of the new music was really cheesy, but a few of the older classics were fun... but the idea of music originating in 'london' being featured, well, they just missed out on so many better songs than the ones they chose. could have been pretty cutting edge history-wise, but ended up very middle of the road.

Loved the Eric Idle bit. Thought Jessie J singing with Queen was pretty darn good actually, the girl can sing. The strange line-up doing Wish You Were Here was rather nice. Not a big Muse fan, but man, they do rock live.

daryl1968 just found out that they cut Ray Davies doing Waterloo Sunset from the US airing - bastards Hearing that, I'm glad I turned it off in disgust at the excessive blandness, musically at least, although I'm very sorry I missed Muse ... had no idea they'd be part of the program. Now, I know Oasis has a lot of fans, but can I be the only one who cannot stomach that singer? I find his voice is irritating and his posturing infantile. I heard that he says his singing with his head pointing up is for vocal reasons. Well here's a clue, dude: the microphone stand is adjustable. You can put the mic higher with little effort. Damn NBC for cutting Mr. Davies, especially when the Oasis singer was deemed more worthy of the air time. And damn them even more for showing only a small bit of the gold metal women's volleyball competition. Yeah, the US lost ... the US viewers will get over it, you know. NBC showed the entirety of the bronz match, and that aired at a far better time to boot. Damn NBC!
