Cutting and Pasting, elementary question.

Hi Folks,

I'm struggling with Copy and Paste.  I can handle the Copy part but aren't happy with the results of Pasting.

Scenario:  I have a couple of clips.  Clip One goes from bar 23 to 31.  Clip 2 goes from bar 31 to 41.  What I want to do is copy bar 37 to bar 38, sounds simple eh?

1. I highlight bar 37.
2. Ctrl-C
3. Place the Now arrow at bar 38.
4. Ctrl V.

What I am expecting is bar 38 to hold the same notes as bar 37.  Well I have partial success.  In the Piano Roll view the notes appear as expected, BUT, for some reason Clip One has been extended to hold the paste operation.  So now clip One goes from bar 31 to bar 39, not what I expected.

Huh?  Am I missing something.  I was expecting the paste to go into Clip Two!

Any ideas?

For an experiment, I pasted into bar 41 and bar 42 and as expected the events appeared in Clip Two, which was extended.  It somehow doesn't like pasting into the same clip.
Not sure if the information is useful or not, but you might as well know :)

Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+V. That'll open the advance paste options where you can choose whether new clips are created or the paste goes to existing ones.

Once set that will become your default. More info on advance copy & paste in two of my videos. Part one & Part two

    Try this:

    1. Copy the notes from bar 37 inside the Piano Roll.
    2. Click in the Track View putting the Time Now at bar 38
    3. Paste

It should create a separate clip.

The reason it extends Clip 1 when you copy/paste in the Piano Roll view is because Sonar "thinks" you want to do exactly that: extend Clip 1 with the newly pasted notes.

    Apologies. I misunderstood. You're right it's a bit odd.

But try what I suggested. I don't have Sonar here so I can't test this but speaking from experience...

If you copy from Clip2 in the PRV, click inside the Track View (to change focus) and paste inside the Track View, what Sonar should hopefully do is create a new clip (Clip3).

Then if you want to merge Clip3 with Clip2, drag-select both clips, right-click and hit B (Bounce clips).

Perhaps I'm not getting the question........ but if it is

"How do I paste MIDI notes into a new clip rather than an exisiting one?"  the answer is in post #3.

Open the advance paste dialogue and change it there.
