MIX or SOS?
Hey, My subscription to SOS is running out and I'm thinking about starting up a subscription to Mix instead. I like SOS, however besides the reviews I'm finding it to be fairly redundant issue after issue. Expecially the Mix Rescue and Studio SOS columns. They each hit on the same topics pretty much every issue. SOS has a Sonar column in each issue, but frankly I have not found these to be very pertinent to me. Any Mix readers here? You like it or not? Thanks.

Mix used to be an industry magazine that featured studio architecture and custom install announcements. It's hard to imagine what it might be at this point. Are you on the TapeOp mailing list?

I get Mix. It's good, it's bad, a lot of what this band is using stuff and the usual articles selling a peice of high end gear. Good outhouse reading, 'cause you'll definitely get G.A.S.

+1 for the TapeOp always worth a read.

Top Op and Producers Edge usually are the two I skim from time to time. Been too busy lately to read many magazines.

Dave King Are you on the TapeOp mailing list? I used to get that. Didn't care for it much. I like it because it focuses on making recordings, dealing with artists, making stuff happen and I feel that once you've figured out the basics of tech that the details Tape Op discusses are so much more influential to making good recordings than any of the tech talk. Anyways, If any one's interested... it's still free for a subscription. all the best, mike

Neither one here.... as a matter of fact, I have very few subscriptions. None that I pay for anyway.... just electrical/security related trade mags....and I stopped filling out the renewal cards for them, but they still keep coming. I used to subscribe to several different music related mags including some on recording and of course Guitar Player. I found them to be more and more, nothing but advertisements for manufacturers of gear and less and less about substance that I found to be useful. The interviews were soft sell sessions that in actuality told me nothing new in most cases or were profanity laced diatribes on some aspect of the music business other than the topic.... guitar playing and tone. They would always approach the subject matter in a generalized way and rarely get to the details that mattered. Through the years of course, there were some exceptions and some really great interviews, but they were not the norm...especially as time went on. I had been a GP subscriber for over 14 years and it was a tough call to let it go.

"profanity laced diatribes..." I canceled a subscription to Rolling Stone a few years back on this basis alone. I just got sick of seeing such launguage used with utter insincerity in an obvious effort to brand a "lifestyle" and define a demographic category. I can handle the foul launguage, but the obvious insincerity and use of it as decorative ornament offended me. all the best, mike

I like SOS but I don't read every issue. If you're contemplating a new subscription I would go out and buy the current and next couple of issues at a newsagent to see if you like it or not and then make your decision.

SOS - I read cover to cover except the part about fixing up broken studio. Best and often fastest reviews. Not afraid of giving something a mediocre review. I agree the Sonar Notes thing in there is in a totally different league (meaning down) than what they put up month to month about Cubase or Logic. I like Craig Anderton, but his Sonar column there is useless to me. I gave up on MIX. It seemed more relevant in the days of mega studios. My current subscription list and ratings: SOS 9+ Future Music 6 Computer Music 8 Premier Guitar 9+ Guitarist 9 Guitar Player 6 I gave up MIX, Electronic Musician, Home Recording, Keyboard, Tape Op, Vintage Guitar, Washtub Bass....
