I use a custom knob from Deaf Eddie.  He's got a lot of really cool wiring for three pickups.  Check out the Fat-O for Fatties as an example (then surf around from there).  He's also excellent for asking questions of.

Here's the link.

And HERE is a PDF I created (of which Space Cowboy has a nice laminated version of) to show all the tone options I had on my last custom - and will on the next.

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Mike you asked for suggestions, I gave you the one
that will give you the the ultimate mixing control over those three pups.

0-100% mix with any of them in any combination.
That is something you'll never get with toggle or rotary switches.

There are only two issues:
You must have the correct blender. (which you are aware of)
This wiring is the ultimate EXCLUDING additional mod's such as pickup wiring modifications and additional controls to achieve modifications such as coil splitting, phase, series/parallel....etc.

As it is the "best" for mixing your pups there is nothing I can offer that will make it
better. ( again, that is without major modifications requiring different controls)

Well I do have one more thing....if you don't wire it as I suggested...everytime you
throw a selector switch think, " - wonder what all the sounds are INBETWEEN that
position and that position sound like?"
I know there are at least four people here that can answer that question on their instruments. I also believe that they wouldn't want to change their wiring with additional switches either. Maybe a "kill" switch if they played live a lot.

One more suggestion lol..."Guitar Electronics Understanding Wiring and Diagrams" by
T.A. Swike - for about 15 dollars at Amazon and....have fun and best to ya Mike!

Re:3 pickup wiring suggestions? 2012/08/19 14:46:53 (permalink)
Now don't laugh...I usually draw in my head. I left out all the ground
as I figure that's in your head.
I also left cap value to what you like for highs to ground.

The thing with the blender is simply when you turn the
knob from center which pups are working...if you don't
like it...switch the contacts.
The hardest part is it's small. Easier to soldier the pups
before the cross jumpers.

With this you have complete mix of the neck and bridge.
The middle pup- you're big concern- can be switched out
or blended with either, both or none of the neck and bridge.
The toggle is simply an on/off switch for it and the volume is
like a mix control and dedicated tone.

Having the blend of the neck and bridge is a MAJOR plus and
is also a great modification for a 5-way Strat.

Edit; I suggested this because it doesn't envolve all those other mod's that I just
don't care for.
Ya want split coils...switch guitars with singles and get the real thing - it's how I feel about it.

Mike I read you wanted a drawing and left to do it....I didn't read the rest until after I posted
this.
I'm sorry if you thought I got annoyed...I don't know about others but I wasn't and didn't mean
to come across as I was, if I did.
I do like talking about mod's but not much. There are so many that just get nuts to me and I see
no value...nothing about nothing but how I feel and what I prefer.
This suggestion is just the best you could get IMO. I know of nothing that will touch it so it's really
all I have to offer.
Hope you understand and hope if you try it you like it.

Mike I've read that some players with the Ric's remark
about the balance issue of the pups- I've never played one.

I think you'll find with this wiring that it will not be an issue
and you'll have greater control of the tonal characteristics because
of the mixing abilities.

I'll state but I know you already know...IF there are tonal issues
that you question then there are two things to do:

The caps- change value
Pickup height- adjust

By using this wiring and those two adjustments one can
"fine tune" the sound and mixing capabilities of those pups and IMO they
should be done before ever making other possible modifications.(which I wouldn't)..and one
will never get these possiblities with switches.

What's so really cool Mike is that it is so easy for you to find out, without doubt, if I'm
full of BS or not LOL.

Have fun and you're quite welcome...I hope it's good to ya!
