Sonar 6 on laptop with Realtek 'soundcard'

I run Sonar 8.5 PE on a PC with the Edirol FA-66. So don't start talking about running Sonar on a laptop with only a Realtek sound thing in it being stupid. I know about that. However, the thing is: I work a lot with my son, who sings, but he is going abroad for quite a long time and we had the idea that I could send him some wavs and that he could load those wavs into Sonar 6 on his laptop and then he could record (ideas for) vocals using a USB-mic (like the Behringer C-1U). But we can't get Sonar to work AT ALL on that laptop... We already installed ASIO4ALL but using default settings and after setting Sonar 6 to ASIO, still nothing happens. Sonar sees no audio devices. We can't even try the profiler.

It SHOULD be possible to run Sonar and at least have some sound on a laptop so maybe someone could share his or hers knowledge about this all...?

And if this won't work, what program out there should be able to run on a laptop and to load a Sonar created wav and to record vocals in a seperate track...? Ideas anyone? The program also should be able to export the vocals as a wav file because I might use some of those recordings.

Try MME. I have a laptop that I wanted to do some MIDI composing on during an overseas trip, and it wouldn't work with anything but MME.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

And ASIO4all is not an ASIO driver, it a wrapper using WDM-KS mode. I also use MME mode when goofing around on the road. You just have to freeze soft synths as they won't work ( at least not for me)

Ok, thanks so far. MME doesn't do anything either though... And I read somewhere else ASIO4ALL needed audio to be set to ASIO. Apparently not. It's a bit odd it's so hard to get this going...! Anyway, I will do some more fooling around with MME enabled...

Yes, yes. Using ASIO4ALL you set SONAR to ASIO.
But like someone already mentioned: If it's a question of only recording the vocal sketches, I'd use something simple, like Audacity, or if you have full version of Nero, it includes a simple multitrack recorder as well.

The Wave profiler does not work when ASIO is in use. Try it with WDM.

I assume you ave already checked the Windows mixer and audio settings in the control panel?? The Realtek hasn't been accidentally disabled, has it? I mean, if you have, say, used some interface with the laptop and so on...

Well, we can't get it to work... however: Audicity works like a charm!  So thanks for that suggestion! Now I will have to find out if that Behringen C-1U is a bit okay or not. But I'll check the hardware forum for that.

There's a sticky in  the SONAR LE forum about making those USB-mics work.

Well, that was your problem in Sonar. Windows treats USB mics as another soundcard and you can't use more than one soundcard if you're using ASIO mode. You would have to switch to WDM or MME.

Hey Dave, I think it actually works with asio4all because asio4all is running as a WDM driver pretending it's ASIO. They call it a "wrapper" what ever that is. But that said I've never read anything good about using USB mikes for serious recording.
