moving midi notes in staff view

Hi, I'm an old user of Cakewalk Express - which worked very well for me and did more than what I need. I've upgraded to Music Creator 4 (then ver 6 -- which I hated and reverted back to 4). In Express - when working in staff view on a midi file, I was able to click on a note - it would sound - then be able to drag it up or down the staff and the notes would sound as I move it. In Creator, I can still do this but I get no sound from the note nor any sounds as I move the note. The scrubber works fine and well as the draw tool. It was just so much easier to use when I the note was played as I moved it. Is there a setting or something that I'm missing???

I agree with you.... I Loved MC4. I ended up with MC5 & MC6 but I never really used them.... I opted for MC4. It just seemed to be a much easier to understand DAW.

I never had issues with dragging notes and hearing them sound.

Try this: be sure the underlying track (for the midi) you are working on is highlighted/selected. I had noticed from time to time no sound in staff and clicking the track in console view seemed to solve that issue.

hmmmm -- so it seems that it's something with my set-up. It's only the select tool (the arrow) that doesn't sound -- the scrubber and draw tools play the sound fine. I've tried reinstalling the program but that didn't do anything. Anyone have thoughts as to why the select tool doesn't sound while the scrubber and draw tools do???

My guess would be because it's not supposed to.
I get the same behavior in SONAR Home Studio 6; the scrub and draw tools sound, but the select tool doesn't.

I have to say that when I worked in MC4 and clicked on a note in staff view, it did sound out and dragging it allowed me to hear the pitch change. Drums on TTS would also change instruments as well as I dragged a note.

I haven't done much staff view editing recently and have switched to X1 so I have not really paid attention.

I do recall a few times where it did not sound and it had something to do with the track being selected or highlighted back in the console view IIRC.

In MC6 you can hear the note when dragging it in the staff view, even drum sounds. I do it all the time. Have never had a problem with it.

It should work that way in all the MC versions and Sonar too.  If it doesn't, something is not set up or selected correctly.
