Meet the Flower Kings

I am watching this video ("Meet the Flower Kings") on the other screen as I type this - holy sh*t this is some good stuff!

Imagine Yes without Jon Anderson's screechy voice. Imagine Dream Theater with better melodies and slowed down to human-readable tempo.

I like this video even better than the Sigur Ros doc. It's THAT good.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Spock's Beard
Reminds me of the 56 song 4 CD project my son was involved in back in Y2K. It's called "Stalin Claus Superstar" it's the story of a war going on in the beard of Capt. Lou Albano while he was in a coma. Funny chit that is. He composed about 30% of it, orchestrated about 80% of it and engineered about 90% of it.

Watched both DVDs over the last few days.  The first disk was totally engaging.  I couldn't believe these guys had never registered on my radar.  What musicianship, what a sense of ensemble, what great music!  I thought the musicians were supurb across the board.  I don't normally even notice drummers all that much, but this guy impressed me with his sense of restraint.  He seemed to know just how far to dail it up and then not go beyond that.

The second disk didn't leave me cold, but it wasn't nearly the exciting experience that the first was.  I guess I'm not quite so taken with the experiments with Rock/Jazz fusion.  But when they're channeling Genesis or Yes, oh my, what a glorious thing that is.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Bit.

Just listened to "The Truth Will Set You Free" on YouTube, it's nice to hear prog rock that's produced and mixed so well. Great stuff.

Resurrecting this dusty thread ... I am listening to the Flower Kings latest album for the first time as I write this.  Fabulous!  Highly recommended.  Thanks again, BF, for turning me on to this group.  Prior to your creating this thread, I had never heard of these guys.

They have been in the lists of modern progressive artists for quite some time, and it is hard to dislike their work, and the same goes for Spock's Beard. Sometimes it takes a bit getting used to, but in the end, they are very good. They are the darlings of the progressive mold and festivals and are known enough to pull an audience.

The only other band I recommend, is Djam Karet, but too many folks here won't like it because it has no lyrics and it's not "songs" per se, that you are all convinced is all music is! Their latest is called "The Trip" and it is one cut, about 48 minutes long, but I think a lot of us have lost the ability to TRIP and enjoy music for what it is. One of their side projects is "Herd of Identity" and both albums are absolutely phenomenal, and this band is by far the most progressive of all out there these days.

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Haha!  Amazon has some work to do.  Because this album is just one cut, I was able to download the whole album for $0.99.  OK, so I feel a little guilty about shortchanging the musicians.  But, hey, if I like it, I'll probably be going back for more.

You wanna get the first 4 albums all the way to "Burning the Hard City". It rivals anything that King Crimson or any other band did in experimentation and creating great music. Some bits and pieces some folks will cynically state ... ohh that sounds like Pink Floyd or whatever, but in the end, it is them and then some!

Their first offering since Heavy Soul Sessions back in 2010 (which was the first since 2005) and well worth $0.99!

Man, I can see why you felt bad (and, probably, pretty good too!).  This is really good and downloading the one song for $0.99 versus buying "the entire CD" for $13.42 is a no-brainer.

space_cowboy ... Porcupine Tree Ozric Tentacles Other modern prog that is very talented

Porcupine Tree, features Steven Wilson that has been doing all those remasters/remixes of all kinds of progressive albums from the last millenia! It also features Richard Barbieri, that was in the band "Japan" before coming to PT.

PT is a band that Steven started in his garage playing all the instruments, and he sold a gazillion number of cassettes and all of a sudden found that he had to put together a band. Finding the musicians when you have the material is easy! But he added good ones, and the drummer is now considered a "progressive" important drummer, though I still think he is way too formulaic, but my idea of progressive drummer is Pierre Moerlin.

Ozric Tentacles is directly influenced by Steve Hillage, and is all instrumental work. They have not been the same, and their work has sadly gotten terribly weaker since their flute/woodwinds player left. His part added a side to the band that was more interesting and fun to listen to. Now, it's just rock music centered around Ed Wynne's abilities and he makes Joe Satriani sound like a kid in the playground. I wonder if I could get Rain to do some of that stuff! But ED uses a keyboard/midi for all his effects and sometimes you can tell he is just jamming on the effect, which is kinda different and nice.

Nowadays, the Ozrics are just the Wynne family band, with his wife playing bass and the son on keyboards, but their sound and material is not as strong as it used to be, and it just sounds like a band in search of a song, and playing around scales, and just a setup for dad's solos.

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

    So it's a Wynne/Wynne/Wynne situation?

Personally, I love all those bands.

Right now, I'm on my fourth listenting of the new Djam Karet CD.  Even without other "influencing substances" I'm really enjoying it!  (And can't stop chuckling that it only cost $0.99.  Hehe...)
