Can't get the MIDI Sound from Sonar 8 to play - Help!!

I think that I'm intellectually challenged....I read through the posts on how to send soft sync to the Midi tracks but I still can't seem to get my system to work....

Here's what I did....

1. Opened a normal session  (it created two audio tracks and 2 midi tracks).
2. Open a soft sync  (Dimension Pro)
3. On the soft sync properties page it gave me several choices; thusa I selected :  Midi Source, Synth Track Folder, First Synth Audio Output and Synth Property Page
4. When Dimension Pro opened, I selected 1st and 2nd Violins under the "Strings" section
5. It executed the program, loaded everything and created a three part Dimension Pro Track for me.
6. Here's where I became extremely confused on how to set everything else up......
7. On the first midi track...which happens to be Track 3....I selected "Input Echo - On"
8. For the INPUT (I selected my M-Audio KeyRig 49 and then moved over to select Midi Omni from the drop down that it gave me.
9. On the OUTPUT it gave the choices of my SB X-FI sound card or Dimension Pro......I selected the SB X-FI soundcard.
10. On the MIDI CHANNEL, I selected Soundfont Device
11. For the BANK, it only had the choice of "Bank" until I played around with it.....it then at some point put in "General Midi"
12. And then the patch....which didn't give me an option somehow came up with all of these instruments....thus I selected "Rhoads Piano"
13. Please note right here that on yesterday when I played around with it, it actually gave me all the tools in Dimension Pro  (right here I think)
14. THAT'S ALL THAT I DID TO THE MIDI TRACK 3
I've tried many many different combinations but none have worked
15. Next, I went to the Dimension Pro track and turned ECHO on
16. For the "INPUT" (Selected my KeyRig 49, Midi Omni).
17. Channel - SoundFont Device

The only way that I can get any sound out of my speakers.....I have to go to the OUTPUT and select DRUM MAP....at that point I do here drums, cymbols, etc.

I don't know if there's a specific order of turning everything "On" and "Off" that I must follow.....Please help

Note: Have had Sonar for a while but am now just really really getting started....

Not to be the Net Police or something but the term is "Soft Synth".

    9. could be the problem. You need to send the OUTPUT of the MIDI track to the soft synth (Dimension Pro). It is this MIDI information that will cause Dimension Pro to produce sound (audio). You could use any MIDI track including the one inserted when you added DimPro but it doesn't really matter which one you choose. Whatever MIDI track you select to use must have the OUTPUT assigned to DimPro. The audio track that contains DimPro should have the OUTPUT set to the SB X-FI sound card. Then you select the MIDI track assigned to DimPro and the Input Echo should light and you (hopefully) should be able to play the keyboard and hear sound.

    7. You don't need Echo Input on to use a softsynth
    8. That was ok, but also unnecessary since None=OMNI. Sonar by default will receive whatever MIDI you send it. You only need to specify a specific channel if you want to limit the input of the track to one channel.
    9. As SToons said, this was wrong. If you're using a softsynth, you do it from a MIDI track with the output set to the softsynth.
10, 11, 12: I usually select the patch from the synth properties page on Dimension Pro since its not really a multitimbral or General MIDI synth.
    15, 16, 17. Also unnecessary.

All you really need to do to use most softsynths is to insert the softsynth and set the output of a MIDI track to the softsynth. Then select the patch from the softsynth's interface (property page). With the TTS-1 its a little different because its a General MIDI synth and you can select the Bank, Channel and Patch from the MIDI track.
