X2 OS ? - Can Someone from CW please answer ...? ANSWERED - Thanks Brandon !

Just looking at an email from CW re the buy X1 get X2 free promo.

Can someone please clarify exactly what this means...

"Please note: SONAR X2 will only support Windows 7 and Windows 8. Windows XP and Windows Vista will no longer be officially supported."

Are you saying there is sone reason why it won't work in XP/Vista or that if it doesn't work, then that's your problem ?

No, it should work.  There is just no support for it, so if you use XP/Vista and have a problem, it ain't Cake's.

It's Cakewalk's way of saying that they bought a one-way ticket on the 64-bit train.

It's true. X2 will not officially support XP. You can use "at your own risk" and there are no specific reasons why it shouldn't work, but XP is no longer part of our official testing matrix and therefore is not officially supported.

We officially recommend Windows 7 for SONAR X2 and will likely add Windows 8 to that list soon enough.

Thanks for reply Brandon. Just to further clarify - will XP/Vista users with any technical probs still get any kind of support (as the particluar problem in question could be nothing to do with the OS) or will it be a case of ....you don't have W7, therefore we're not talking to you ?

I think CW support is pretty understanding when it comes to usability questions on an unsupported configuration. But technical problems (crashes, errors, etc) won't have any guarantee.

Thanks again for prompt response. Not quite a free lunch then - but ain't that always the case ? ;)

While I have your attention, do you know if there will be any changes to the colour customisation options in X2 ?  Console view is my main concern. If you are unable to say  - do you know when this info will be available ?

Finally!!!! Out standing!!!! We can only hope that this is true!!!
I hope they stop deliver and support SONAR x32bit too!

One thing that is sad though they say Windows 8 going to be released as a x32bit looser version of the OS too? I hope not!?
Still no one going to use it so why bother?

Hey Paulo, for what it's worth man...you really should consider upgrading to Win 7 if you can. I've always been one of the last to upgrade an OS especially when I have a well-oiled machine. However, I made the jump to Win 7 a few months after it was released and I can honestly say it's been my best computer experience in everything...especially the DAW world. It's amazing the things that DON'T happen now that happened to me in Vista and XP. So definitely consider it...I honestly feel if you made one update this year, Win 7 should be one of the tops on your list. :) I know you may have your reasons why you'd not want to...but it's been one of the best things I've ever done.

The best upgrade I've done to Sonar was to upgrade to Win 7. It seriously changed everything!

My experience is that X1 runs even better on Windows 8.  I would recommend bypassing Win 7 altogether and go to Windows 8 when you upgrade to X2 (unless you have hardware that won't be supported in Windows 8).

if there was no 32-bit version of X2 I wouldn't buy it. UAD is 32-bit. Till they go 64, I run a 32-bit DAW.

i skipped right over windows vista and bought windows 7 as soon as it came out.
ive never been more impressed with a windows release then i was with windows 7.its structure is amazing.

i dont blame cakewalk for not supporting windows xp.
windows xp came out on Oct.25,2001.
im well aware there are a fair amount of loyal xp users out there but i think its time now.
about a month ago i had a house call from an old friend of mine,i showed up only to see he was running windows ME.
i almost spit my coffee out.
i know people dont want to upgrade for compatibility reasons and thats fair enough.
but you dont want to get caught up in the windows 7 learning curve and learning a new sonar x2 at the same time.
id be upgrading right now to 7.

Hey Danny - thanks for your advice. I'm not against having W7, it's just that I need to have XP for a few other things I use that seem to require it as they won't even work on my vista (yuk!) pc.  I have no issues with my XP system and am still using 8.5PE as I was never totally convinvced by X1 tbh - many of the issues are obviously sorted now, but the lack of colour configuration was still a deal breaker for me - I use dual monitors, one track view / one console view and console view just looks horrible full screen , which is a shame, 'cos track view looks good and there are other nice toys, but the console view turned me off it  - found it hard to look at that all the time. With the buy one, get the next free though it was starting to look too tempting until you  read below the headlines.

I guess the point really was that X1 is now being sold with big banner headlines - buy one get one free, when actually for non W7 users it's more like buy one get one free as long as you're prepared to upgrade / buy a new pc at the same time. As Brandon has said, there's no specific reason it won't work - I was just trying to find out exactly where the line will be drawn in terms of troubleshooting if there was a problem with something not working, mainly because of the wording that it doesn't "officially" support XP, which could be taken that unofficially it does if you see what I mean ?

I think I'll wait and see what (if anything) happens with the colours. I don't want to still be stuck with X1 console view after upgrading both Sonar to X2 and the PC.

Dropping XP is inevitable but I for one am not happy to see Vista support being dropped so soon by so many companies. Native Instruments, FXpansion and now Cakewalk.

My three year old 64 bit Vista system is bullet proof and still very powerful. I hope not to have to upgrade the OS until I replace the hardware.

Despite the bad press 64 bit Vista SP2 is an excellent OS, in my opinion far better than XP ever was and is still supported by Microsoft.

+100 - I've had Windows 7 since the pre-release version. At the time I put it on an Asus laptop that had Vista on it. Boy, what a difference. I went out and bought it the first day it was available. It's definitely a big step to upgrade a machine that's been stable for years, I guess this is why virtually every hospital I've ever been in over the last 10 years has had XP on all of their machines. But come on, XP is 12 years old now! Onwards and upwards....

Srsly tho, I was on XP for ages and finally bit the bullet and upgraded, pretty smooth and nice actually. Win7 is solid.

Win 7 has been the best OS I've ever used, period. I never went to Vista. XP was good but it still needed a re-install every so often. I've been using the same Win 7 install since I first installed it for over 2 years (or however long I've had it lol!). You can't go wrong.

Win 8 is coming out soon. I plan on getting it right away but I won't install it yet. You can't beat the upgrade right away price for the pro version. I won't install it until my hardware is supported and I see what people say about it.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.
