Crazy Fun!

I know it's a big whop-t-do to ya'll but
I'm quite excited...as I just re-wound my first
pickup.
I soldered the lead wires on and put the tester
on it and YES. I didn't short it out.

Now I'm going to "pot" it.
I've ordered paraffin and beeswax ( 80/20) mix
and heat to @140 and dip the pup.
They say this part can be dangerous...I thought that
bobbin spinnin' like crazy was...

I didn't feel right posting a picture lol. It looks like a pup again.

Well it was one of two Strat pups that I damaged somehow
while switching them in and out of different guitars so at least
I'm recovering my losses. I still have 4 more that I've damaged...guess
I'm ruff on pups.
Anxious to hear it after the dip.

The wax is to connect everything to help stop microphonics.

Future historians would later point to this moment as the point in time when he could have been stopped.  Had the Coffee House done so, the AI Singularity might never have occurred.  The survivors can only speculate now about how history might have developed.

    Re:Crazy Fun! 2012/08/22 20:42:11 (permalink)
Thanks Alex! Yeah I'm still pumped.

Bubba I thought rewinding a pup was confusing enough...now
should I be concerned about historians too?

I sure wish I had one of those hats and sword...I would take a picture!

So...there are only two wires...one starts the wrap and one ends it...which is
    + and which is - ?
If there are 3 single coils and the polarity is a mix of N and S what is the mix?
Is it two Souths and one North or is it two Norths and one South?
If the wraps of copper are clockwise and counter-clockwise which polarity gets
    which direction?
Do the  North magnets get wrapped clockwise?
Do the South magnets get wrapped counter-clockwise?

All these questions sure needs answers...help?

Nobody has asked how many wraps, in what direction, what polarity, what wire size and
how many wraps....and what was the final resistance reading?

    Polarity- South
    Clockwise wrap
42 heavy- because I was hoping it would help me not break that tiny wire
7,000 wraps IF my counter is working correctly
4k resistance - not good IMO but it's what I was shooting for. The reason is
that it should be weak and bright.

After I pot it I will find out if I'm right...pretty sure I am.

Next one will be 9,000 wraps and I hope to get a reading of 6 to just under 8k.
I need to know how full the bobbin is at 9,000 to see how hot I can get with this
    wire.
The hotter the pup...the lower the highs.

The gauss of the magnets is what they were from Fender which should be right at 25.
I'll post a picture later of the measurement.

The parts I'll order to build my first one will not have charged magnets. I will charge them
and look for the same strength/gauss.

So...if ya wanna answer some questions that would be cool.............................for
    me anyway. :)

I'll be interested in how the potting goes. I have acouple of P-90s that need to be potted and I have paraffin and beeswax. It is just one of those things that slpiied onto the back burner. I didn't know about the 20/80 ratio so I am interested in how it goes for you. Is it 20% beeswax and 80% paraffin?

    Very cool!

J this is what I'm going to try- it's a dipper warmer.
    The mix is 20% beeswax.
J I have to tell you...if you go for it I've
read that it is VERY dangerous. It's recommended
not to even attempt it inside.
I didn't realize the danger I was putting myself in when I
was a kid making water candles.

Another issue- if it's to hot +140 f you could warp the
    bobbin material.

I hope this warmer will get hot enough so I can leave
    the wax in it.
Others I know have tried the crock pot version of this
and it's to hot...not sure how they correct or if they do.
I may have to find out.
I think this was about 15 dollars at Amazon.

Here is measuring the magnet gauss
on the old pup I rewound.

Here is the roll of 42awg heavy and the first
    pup I've rewound.

Everything went very good except the wire guide
bar. I had sanded it but it's to ruff and the wire
didn't glide across it side to side. Easy fix.

Well hope you guys enjoy this.
Some of those questions are very important if you
like to change out pups...if you want to know just ask.
    If I can help...that's a good thing.

    OH YEAH....I had a great idea!...I think I can make a round
platter to old the bobbins out of CD's ! LOL...will be giving
that a go this weekend. :)

I once tried to melt parafin in a toaster oven.

    Really bad idea.

Of course throwing the burning oven out the back door was an even worse idea... as the grass was brown from drought.

I finally has a good idea when I realized I had to run to the front yard to grab a hose to use in the backyard.

That's great news about the pickup success.

    Super cool!

The fun of self exploration, just be careful with the potting mix, can not wait to hear the finished product.  Would a compass not give a hint of polarity or is that a complete fur-ball idea????

    Re:Crazy Fun! 2012/08/23 13:01:00 (permalink)
John a compass will work fine.
Notice the gauss meter has + indicator but for just checking
polarity the little magnet in the tube for a couple of dollars or a compass
is much cheaper. A gauss meter hits in hundred $+.

Sound is the story. I plan on testing all of the Strat pups on one guitar.
I'm going to record it straight in. I'll record the original pup (in whatever position)
and then I'll record the one I rewound.
I'll be going for neck and bridge positions first as the middle is the singular.

I have to rewind one more before I attempt the potting. It'll be with 9,000 wraps then
I'll have two to sound check - each in neck and bridge position.
I may get the middle ready for test too but focus now is on neck and bridge.

    The reasoning is - I want to have sound records of;
    Original
Rewound with original magnets.  7,000 and 9,000 wraps. (whatever ohms it measures)
Completely new with magnets I charge. 7,000 and 9,000 wraps. (whatever ohms it measures)

I'm thinking the following test will be winding to the resistance (however many wraps).

Of course- all with the same wire and type of magnets.

I hope to have sound samples of the two- each in neck and bridge positions by the next
weekend ( 9-1). If all goes well I'll have the middle too. I have only one bobbin for middle so I'll go for 9,000 wraps on it.

I've thrown in a delay though. I have to build a round platter out of CD's. I have to find
out...I can't get it out of my head so I have to go for it. :)
I want the smoothest turn and smoothest wire guide I can get and I think the CD platter
will do that and wire guide is nothing more than fine sanding....now I have to rig up
    a dial indicator ...sheesh.

    LOL ...happy to myolpal.

Well the CD's for a round platter didn't go well.
I super-glued about 6 together so it would be stiff
and thick enough to bolt to the spinner...plastic.

I'm back to focusing on wrapping and potting...upgrades or mod's
    can happen down the road.

While I wait on the wax and dipper to try out potting I'll be
winding another Strat pup ( neck or bridge) and two Tele neck pups...
hopefully they'll go as smooth as the first. :)

I'll probably post pics of them while taking the readings with # of wraps info.
