I am now thoroughly convinced my neighbor does not like loud bass
It shows in the way she attacks my door at like 12:20 am. What is wrong with this crazy person that she knocks like that? Screaming like a maniac, "turn that down." Its either the kick drum, or the bass she has a problem with. ALthough, in my defense.. I was actually working on a really distorted synth sound.. Pfft.. these people are so nuts... who even knows..

I hate my neighbor's loud bass as well. While I love bass heavy music up front, there is nothing worse, IMO, than the sound of muffled bass coming through a wall when you're trying to concentrate. Muffled TV dialog as well, that really lights my fuse.

If you are operating within your municipality's noise ordinances tell her to get lost. If you are cranking it up in the middle of the night or obnoxiously early... well that is pretty annoying. I've always made sure I shut down the noise before 10 PM. But you said she's freaking out at noon so as I said tell her get lost. Let her call the cops. They'll likely tell her to stop harassing you and wasting their time.

Beepster But you said she's freaking out at noon so as I said tell her get lost. Let her call the cops. They'll likely tell her to stop harassing you and wasting their time. OP says 12:20am. Joking aside, it can be a pretty serious affair to disturb a neighbor with noise after a certain time. I think it's 10pm in NYC. After which, if you're making a noise, your neighbor might be keeping a noise diary. I think if you continue to make noise after you've gotten a warning, they can ultimately confiscate your equipment. I just wish noise insulation was more of a priority when constructing buildings. I was in a relatively new apartment building recently and you could hear everything from next door through the air vents. Conversations, TV dialog, everything. If I was in the market for a new condo, I would jump at a building that advertised soundproofing as a feature. There are certain buildings in NYC that are renowned for their soundproofing and musicians flock to them, for example the Armory on 42nd st. I really need to get me a place like that.

Oops. You're right, sharke. Not enough caffeine. Linear, dude... I like ya but cranking things up that late isn't cool. I used to have full volume practices in my place and never had a problem because I kept things friendly with my neighbors and shut down at a reasonable hour. Never had a complaint and never had the cops come... and it was full on screecher metal. I agree with sharke that buildings are very poorly insulated. It's a real problem but it's the way it is. Unless you have the cash for a decent soundproofed unit it's best to toss on the headphones at a certain time at night because the cops WILL come and they WILL shut you down if they get enough complaints. You really don't want to be on that side of the fence. Food for thought. Cheers.

When my neighbor does that, I don't bother banging on his door, I just call the cops and let them deal with it. He's really pissed now because he doesn't know who called them ! hahahaha !!!! nice and quiet now !!

I've recently discovered that there are so many non-musical ways to disturb your neighbor. Mine is this 20 year old d-bag who makes a point of digging in with his toes when he's walking up the stairs, so that his sneakers make a squeaking noise with each step. You can hear it 5 flights down and all the way up. He also slams his door when he comes and goes. The kid sells weed, not very discretely, and so he has people coming and going all the time. He has to let them in the building because the buzzer is broken, so it's up and down the stairs all night with that infernal squeaking, then everyone is slamming the door as they're entering or leaving. Sometimes they wake me up at 4am because they're rapping to each other - badly - and stomping their feet to keep rhythm. Oh and now he's gotten himself a little pit bull puppy that yaps for 15 minutes whenever he leaves. I hate him.

I like the logic.. its past midnight, someone may need to get up at 5am or 6am, you are making way to much noise, you wake them up (or keep them awake)... and the conclusion is "they dont like bass"?

@sharke... Yeah, that sucks. I have a VERY hard time sleeping at the best of times and the tiniest little noise will wake me up and then my mind starts racing so I can't get back to sleep for like 20 minutes if at all. I went completely gung ho with soundproofing in this room and it helps a LOT but if someone is directly above me I hear every footstep. It is extremely frustrating and messes me up way worse than most people due to my poor health. Fortunately I have no where to be in the mornings so I just stay in bed a little longer but if I still had to work I'd be destroyed. I really hope my next place is built properly.

Sucks when you can't get back to sleep. I have a problem with a racing mind in bed at the best of times. I find that taking a GABA supplement helps, and also a dose of melatonin when I can't sleep. Magnesium citrate also tends to make me sleep better with less waking.

For a short period I used to have a neighbour that knocked on the wall when I was recording guitar. But I'm usually quite quiet. And I never complained to her about the noise I heard her making in bed.

If I can hear the neighbor distinctly (had that issue in Russia, through ventilation traps), I usually take it that I'm better off working w/ headphones. Otherwise I rarely work at a level going anywhere beyond being able to have a casual conversation. I'm trying to enjoy our place here while I can because soundproofing is pretty incredible. I can actually sing w/o worrying that the neighbors will hear me re-do the same take 307 times. ;)

Hey Linear Phase next time you crank it up like that can you do me a favour and get a hold of a SPL meter, set it to the C weighting and tell me what it is. You may have lost track a bit at how loud it may have been. I know it is easy to do. I think not going past 9 or very latest 10 PM is a fair thing. But I am lucky also as I have 4 days a week here where I can get loud. Everyone goes off to work here during the day which is pretty good I must admit.

UbiquitousBubba Neighbors [shudder] Glad I don't have those anymore. Glad I don't have those anymore. Oh no. I won't ask. Linear Phase, If you are mixing many of the experts will tell you that the lower levels are best to hear the mix entirely. If you're making hip hop beatz going into those frequencies that might set off small earthquakes then yeah I'd get a set of headphones that I like and wear them after 9-10pm. Out where I live the crickets and locusts get so loud outside that they pretty much drown out most of what I do.I do my wife a big favor and put the headphones on after around 9. I might repeat a part several hundred times and that can drive some people insane, not to mention the noise.

Darn.. This neighbor is complaining again. IMHO She does not like kick drums, "before they have been compressed and eq'd." You would think she would have a little patience... I was trying out several different comps to see which one, would be best, for this particular kick sound. Then obviously, the very next thing would be, "EQ." Now of course, I feel totally uncomfortable doing this all tonight. And its not even loud.. its just a lil, "boomy," at the current moment.
